Churches host Christmas Eve services

The following churches have scheduled Christmas Eve services:


Faith Baptist Church of Altoona — 6 p.m. candlelight service. The theme is, “Jesus Christ was Born to Die that We Might Live.” The service includes congregational singing, special Christmas music by Faith Baptist musicians and Christmas meditations given by Pastor Gary G. Dull and Pastor Chaz Dull. A nursery is available for children under age 3. The church is at the corner of Fourth Avenue and 40th Street in the Highland Park section of the City.

Wehnwood Community —

4 and 7 p.m. Holy Communion and candle-lighting will be held at both services. A potluck supper will be shared at 5:15 p.m.


Juniata Church of the Brethren, 306 N. Ninth Ave., Altoona – 7 p.m. candlelight service. The service will feature congregational singing, the Christmas musical “God With Us — Christ In Us” by Durward McCord. The Juniata Festival Players will present the vignette “That Wonderful Time of the Year.” The Rev. Robert Wharton will deliver the message “Prophecies Concerning Christ’s Coming” based on Daniel 9 and Micah 5:2. The service will conclude with “Silent Night,” which celebrates 200 years this year. Cookies and hot cocoa will be served after the program.


Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, Altoona — 5 p.m. and midnight. Bishop Mark Bartchak will be the celebrant and homilist of midnight Mass.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish, Altoona — 4 p.m. and midnight; 5 p.m. at Assumption Chapel

Sacred Heart Parish, Altoona — 5:30 p.m. and 9 p.m.

St. John the Evangelist, Altoona — 4 p.m. and 10 p.m.

St. Mary (Immaculate Conception) Parish, Altoona —

4 p.m. and midnight, with traditional carols sung in German.

St. Rose of Lima Parish, Altoona — 5 p.m., 7:30 p.m. and midnight

Mardorf United Methodist Church — 5 p.m. brass choir performance; 5:30 p.m. service. The church is at 3429 Juniata Gap Road, Altoona.

Fairview United Methodist Church, 2214 Fifth St., Altoona – 7:30 p.m.

Second Avenue United Methodist Church, 130 Second Ave., Altoona — 4:30 p.m. traditional service with organ, hand bells and choir; 7 p.m. contemporary service with praise band. There will be a candle-lighting at both services.

United Parish

Simpson-Temple United Parish – 7 p.m. candlelight service of Holy Communion, scripture and carols. Simpson-Temple United Parish is at 2212 Sixth Ave.


Smith Corner Church, 1955 Johnstown Road, East Freedom —

6 p.m. candlelight service.

The Oasis of Love Church of Huntingdon — 6 p.m. The church is along Station Road, across from Southside Elementary School.
