John and Mary Crynock
They were united in marriage on Dec 2, 1950, at St. Agnes Parish in Cassandra by the Rev. Paul Viegle.
John “Butch” grew up in Bennington (Gallitzin) and Mary was from Benscreek (Portage Township).
John’s career path varied from carpentry, Bethlehem Steel and a foreman with New Florence Mining Co. before retiring, but continued to work as a handyman well into his retirement years.
He is also a veteran of the Korean War.
Mary worked at the Melotti family store in Benscreek, the Cresson Plastic factory and then as a homemaker while also working part-time at Star Print Publications in Portage before retiring.
The couple have three children; Kathy (Denny) Ratosky, John “Bino” (Bonnie) and Scott, all of Portage.
They have four grandchildren: Sheri Ratosky (deceased), Denny Ratosky Jr., Robbie and Timmy Crynock.
They have four great grandchildren.
A traditional celebratory party with family and friends could not be held due to the COVID pandemic, so to celebrate their 70th anniversary milestone, their family organized a surprise parade held on Dec 6, 2020.
Sixty-three vehicles of family and friends made up the one mile-long parade that was led by a firetruck from the Portage Volunteer Fire Company.
Prior to the parade, Father Joseph Nale of St. Bartholomew Parish in Wilmore, where John and Mary are parishioners, visited to provide a blessing for the couple.
