DAR hears history of Duncansville

The Adam Holliday Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution met Oct. 18 at the Hollidaysburg Area Public Library Community Room.

Warren Baker, president of the Duncansville Historical Society, told of the founding of Duncansville. Settlers came through this area on a wagon route before the canal days. The Walters family settled on the east side of the Blair River called Walterstown, and the Duncan family settled on the west side of the river known as Duncansville. The Walters log house dating to the 1820s still remains on Third Avenue.

Because of the increase in population it was decided to have one name. Duncan won the coin toss, hence the name Duncansville since 1836. Three prominent farms dating to the 1890s were Forst Dairy, the Vipond Farm and the John Lloyd Farm and mansion on the hill that can be seen from I-99.

The Conservation Committee reported that Fort Roberdeau National Historic Site has begun the conservation effort of propagating acorns from the Witness Tree, the White Oak tree estimated to be 255 years old. It would have been nine years old when the Fort was built.

DAR Project Patriot Committee collected “Wish List” items to be delivered to veterans at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md.

Any woman at least 18 years of age who can prove lineal descent to a patriot who served in the Revolutionary War or gave aid to American Colonists is eligible for DAR membership.
