Altoona Area Public Library announces November events

The Altoona Area Public Library, 1600 Fifth Ave., Altoona, has announced its events for the month of November.

— In partnership with the Video Game Clubs of America, the library is hosting a gaming club from 3 to 5 p.m. Tuesdays in November. With tabletop board games, card games, Nintendo Switch and more, each week will be something different for you to enjoy with your friends. Call 814-946-0417 ext. 125 to register.

— The Women’s Community Art Group will be held at 6 p.m. Nov. 6. It is an open art studio where women can create art of their choice. There will be a variety of art materials available for use and participants may also bring a project they are currently working on. This is a time for relaxation, creative expression and connection. This program is for women ages 18 and up and will be instructed by Elaine Baney, an art therapist and educator with more than 20 years’ experience instructing art. — First Friday Fun: 10 a.m. Nov. 7 — This special play time is for children ages 3 and under. Come in clothes that can get messy because we’ll have a variety of fun sensory stations to explore. — At 11 a.m. on Nov. 8, join us at our Memory Cafe for individuals living with dementia and their caregivers. You will find a safe and welcoming environment where forming friendships and connections for both the loved ones and caregivers is encouraged. The Memory Cafe reduces the stigma and isolation that comes with living with dementia and promotes the well-being of everyone that attends. Join us in the library boardroom to socialize while participating in planned activities designed to strengthen cognitive skills while having fun. — LEGO clubs: 6 p.m. Nov. 10 and 13 — Unleash your creativity with LEGO club! This program is geared towards children ages 4 and up. Monthly registration and a library card is required. Call 814-946-0417 ext. 123 to sign up.

— Fort Roberdeau — Defending the Lead Mine: An Untold Story of the Revolution: 6 p.m. Nov. 10 — Join Dr. Jared Frederick for an engaging lecture on Fort Roberdeau, the Revolutionary War frontier outpost that created a foundation for industrial growth in central Pennsylvania. In this talk, Frederick will explore the fort’s unique role in protecting lead mining operations, its connections to Native American history and the challenges faced by settlers on the edge of the American wilderness. This program expertly brings together military history, local heritage and dramatic stories of peril that defined the Revolutionary era.

— Fiber Fun Saturday: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 11 — Come join the Kneedle Knerds United and bring your favorite fiber crafts. Experienced crafters may be available to help you get started. This is a free adult program. No registration required.

— Teen Japanese Ink Painting: 3 p.m. Nov. 12 — Looking to de-stress after a day of school? Join us at the AAPL for a calming zen craft. Using water, ink and a touch of wind, you will be able to create fun and expressive works. This is a free program for teens ages 12-18. Call 814-946-0417 ext. 125 to register.

— Super Silly Stories: 10:30 a.m. Nov. 13 — Preschoolers ages 3 and up and caregivers are invited to enjoy some super silly stories at the library. This program is free and registration is required. Call 814-946-0417 ext. 123 to register.

— Cow Launch Party: 3 to 4:30 p.m. Nov. 13 — Mooooo-ve on down to the AAPL as we celebrate the newest member of our community. The youth room has (virtually) adopted a calf, and we want to welcome them in style. Join our librarians for an “udder”ly great story at 3 p.m. and break out your best cow impression for our mooing contest at 3:30 p.m. Crafts will also be available in the youth room from 3 to 4 p.m.

— Suminagashi: Japanese Ink Painting — 6 p.m. Nov. 13 — Cooler weather is here and that means it’s time to stay indoors and pick up a new craft. Learn about the Japanese art form of Suminagashi. Using ink, water and a touch of wind, you’ll have everything you need to create a unique piece of art. This is an adult program. Call 814-946-0417 ext. 125 to register.

— Intro to Spanish: 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Nov. 14 — Join us for a lively ongoing program introducing children ages 3-6 to Spanish language and culture through songs, stories and playful activities. Young learners will explore basic vocabulary and cultural traditions in a fun, age-appropriate setting. It’s a wonderful way to spark curiosity and build early language skills. — Visit the AAPL from 2 to 3 p.m. Nov. 15 for a fun-filled Dog Man Meet and Greet event designed just for kids 12 and under. Snap a photo with Dog Man himself, and grab a Dog Man goodie bag while supplies last. It’s the perfect chance for young fans to celebrate their favorite crime-fighting canine.

— Paws 4 Reading: 5 p.m. Nov. 17 — This heartwarming program partners the library’s youth room with the local humane society to create a paw-some reading adventure. Kids practice reading aloud to furry friends, boosting their confidence and literacy skills while giving adoptable pets some much-needed love and attention. — Homeschool Hub: Stellar Stargazers — 1 p.m. Nov. 6 ­– Tear your gaze away from the sea of stars and join us as we explore the history of these celestial pictures. — Folded Book Art Turkeys: 5 p.m. Nov. 24 — In this hands-on craft program, children ages 6-12 will learn the art of book folding, the creative way to recycle old books into adorable 3D sculptures. — DINOvember Storytime: 3 p.m. Nov. 26 — Come to the AAPL for a special storytime dedicated to everyone’s favorite prehistoric residents. We will be reading “Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs” by Mo Willems. A selection of dinosaur-themed crafts and activities will be available afterwards. Ages 12 and under. — The Friends of the Library will be hosting their monthly book club at 10 a.m. Nov. 15 in the library theater. The book for the month is “Reckless Girls” by Rachel Hawkins. — Crafternoon: Book Angel — 2 p.m. Nov. 15 — This crafternoon, we will be recycling damaged books and transforming them into decorative angels. All materials will be provided. Registration and a Blair County Library Card is required. Call 814-946-0417 ext. 125 to register.

— Marvelous Machines: Parade of Power — 3:30 p.m. Nov. 18 — We’re marching towards our next simple machine: the parade float! Join us as we learn about the principles that allow these massive stages of merriment to “float” along and design your own entry into the AAPL Miniature Marvel Parade. This is for grades 1 to 5. — Bottled Wonders for Teens: 3 p.m. Nov. 19 — After school, teens can make mini sensory bottles that fit in their pocket or bag. Teens will be able to add in glitter, beads and feathers to create a sensory bottle. Ages 12-18. Call 814-946-0417 ext. 125 to register.

— Friends of the Library are holding a game night from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Nov. 20 in the library board room. No registration is required. Ages 12 and up.

— At 10:30 a.m. Nov. 21, join our friends from the Altoona Symphony Orchestra as they introduce our youngest patrons to the beauty and joys of the symphony in this unique, hands-on program. This program is ideal for families who are seeking a way to introduce the symphony orchestra and in particular the role of the conductor to children aged 3 to 6. This program will incorporate music exploration using multimedia and hands-on presentations. Children will receive an overview of the orchestra and will have the opportunity to play the role of the conductor. Call 814-946-0417 ext. 123 to register.

— Glow and Lather: Nov. 22 from 1 to 3 p.m. — In partnership with Home & Harvest, we will be making soap and a candle to take home. This program is split into four 30-minute sessions with 10 spots available for each session. Patrons must register and pre-pay to reserve their materials by Monday, Nov 17. This is an adult program. — AAPL Shelf Indulgence Adult Book Club will be held at 10 a.m. Nov. 22. This is a BYOM (bring your own mug) with a choice of coffee or tea. This month’s book is “The Reading List” by Sara Nisha Adams. Register by calling 814-946-0417 ext. 125.

— First Time Homebuyer Bootcamp will be held at 6 p.m. Nov. 25. This program is aimed to help first-time homeowners learn more about what to expect when meeting with real estate agents and lenders. Program partners are Tami Zuluaga from Coldwell Banker Town and Country Real Estate and Betty Heffner from PA Equity Resources Inc.

— Mahjong Club meets from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursdays in the library. All adult patrons are welcome to come in to play. No registration required.

— Chess Club meets from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursdays. All are welcome to come in on Thursday nights to play chess. Meet at the front tables on the first floor. No registration necessary. Anyone under the age of 16 needs to be accompanied by their legal guardian.

— Families of young children are invited to check out the Altoona Area Public Library’s free educational story time programs for caregiver and child to enjoy together.
