African American Heritage Fest Returns, Local Fair Season Begins This Weekend!

Here is a listing of area live music and online music happenings for the weekend and week of Friday, July 22 through Thursday, July 28.

Among the highlights on yet another busy live music summer weekend is the return and rebirth of the Blair County African American Heritage Festival, happening on Saturday and Sunday at its new location, Altoona’s Railroaders Memorial Museum. After debuting in 1994 at Altoona’s Garfield Park, the annual festival called Penn State Altoona its home for the next two decades, before going on indefinite hiatus after 2014 due to financial woes. But renewed interest and enthusiasm has led to the festival’s return. Taking place in the Museum’s lot and along the 1200 block of 9th Avenue (which will be closed to traffic), the festival will feature educational displays, vendors, food, children’s activities, fun and live entertainment – including an afternoon slate of performers on Saturday, and a Sunday Gospel Fest. The festival kicks off at noon both days, and admission is free. See the listing below for the festival’s Saturday music lineup.

Altoona’s Rockin’ the Yard summer concert series resumes on Friday evening at the Jaffa Shrine’s upper lot. New York-based Guns N’Roses tribute group Get Your Guns will headline this concert, with longtime hard-rocking area favorites Half Tempted opening. The music kicks off at 6 p.m.

And county fair season starts back up in this neck of the woods on Sunday, with the start of the week-long Bedford County Fair. The fair will have its popular amenities of plentiful food vendors, games and rides, farm animals and entertainment, including music each day through Saturday. See the listing below for the fair’s musical entertainment slate through Thursday. (Friday and Saturday’s entertainment will be included in next weekend’s listing.)

Once again, a multitude of live music opportunities take place through the weekend and upcoming week, so browse the schedule below to see who is on stage, choose some events and – as always – SUPPORT LIVE MUSIC!
