Summer Sounds, Rockin’ the Yard, St. Patrick’s Festival and More This Weekend!

Here is a listing of area live music and online music happenings for the weekend and week of Friday, August 13 through Thursday, August 19.

In conjunction with this week’s weather, live music continues hot and heavy this weekend with several concerts and festivals, with more on the horizon.

Both the Summer Sounds Concert Series and Rockin’ the Yard happen on Friday night in the Altoona area. Summer Sounds at Heritage Plaza will present former Rusted Root drummer Jim Donovan and his Sun King Warriors with their trademark mix of “groove-rock, Americana and two tons of drums for three hours of musical fun starting at 6 p.m. Meanwhile, the latest installment of the Rockin’ the Yard concert series at the Jaffa Shrine (upper parking lot) features New York-based Pat Benatar tribute Fire & Ice, with singer Darion belting out song favorites from Pat’s catalog. The group has been recognized by Pat herself. Opening will be local rocking favorites Downshift. Proceeds from Rockin’ the Yard help out Shriner’s Children’s Hospital, the Blair/Clearfield County Association for the Blind, and FC814 youth soccer. The music here begins at 6 p.m. as well.

The 38th annual St. Patrick’s Parish Festival in the Shade takes place in Newry Friday evening through Sunday, featuring food, games, a craft and quilt sale, and live music all three days. Mama Corn kicks off the music on Friday night, with Full Kilt on Saturday evening and the Fabulous Flashbacks entertaining on Sunday afternoon. Admission is free for all three days.

The 45th annual Claysburg Area Community Days happens at Claysburg’s Community Park both Saturday and Sunday. This event will feature food and refreshments, arts and crafts vendors, children’s activities, a petting soo, and live music. Felix & the Hurricanes entertain on Saturday evening, and Stephanie & the Wild Hearts close out the music on Sunday afternoon. Admission is free.

The annual Huntingdon County Fair winds down this weekend. Country music will be the prominent flavor both Friday and Saturday nights; Friday’s music will be provided by Make Mine Country and Dion Pride’s “A Tribute to My Father Charley Pride,” and The Big Band Sound and Chris Woodward & Shindiggin’ close out the fair’s music on Saturday evening.

And for fans of rock’s heavier side, the Clearfield County Fairgrounds will be epicenter for the “Upstage Music Fest” on Saturday. The music kicks off at 11:30 a.m., with 17 area, regional and touring rock, heavy metal and hardcore bands taking the stage. Admission is $25 at the gate.
