“Dadcore” for Dad’s Day This Weekend!

Here is a listing of Pennsylvania live music happenings for the weekend and week of Friday, June 19 through Thursday, June 25.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19/coronavirus situation, many live music venues across the state are not able to host performances at this time. As some restrictions are being lifted locally, some acoustic indoor shows and outdoor events are happening. However, some bands and performers continue to stage online performances on social media from their own homes, studios and other facilities. Below are live public and online performance situations that have been announced (that I am aware of); keep checking back, as this listing will be updated as new shows are announced. Feel free to take in any of these performances, and if a “virtual tip jar” situation is available with the online performances, please consider tipping these performers, and support them during this time when they cannot earn income playing shows at public venues. Websites for these performers are also listed; please consider purchasing their music digitally or via CD, which is another way to SUPPORT LIVE MUSIC!

With Father’s Day happening Sunday, a group of area punk-rocking dads is again providing an amped-up lead-in to that special day on Saturday night. The Snipped – featuring Mike Wax on vocals and guitar, Jeff Reid on lead guitar, Justin Burket on drums and recent addition Frank Conrad on bass – will anchor their second annual “Father’s Day Bash” at McGarvey’s. The Snipped will perform their brand of “dadcore,” punk rock partially themed around dad lives, behaviors, issues and concerns. Expect to hear new and older original song favorites, and maybe even a “dadcore” Bruce Springsteen cover. Joining The Snipped for the revelry are local punk-rocking friends X’s For Eyes and Pittsburgh’s The New 52. The music begins at 9 p.m., and seating is limited.

And while live streaming performances are dwindling as more performers return to live performance stages, several performers will still offer online performances during the next seven days; including Pittsburgh’s “Manful Handful” Norman Nardini on Friday night, State College’s Biscuit Jam and The Clarks’ Scott Blasey (in his final “Live from the Blasement” live stream performance) on Saturday night, and western PA harmonica wailer Charlie Barath, popular Pittsburgh guitarist Tony Janflone, Jr. and Austin, Texas-based Hanna Barakat (with former Altoona area musician Lisa Fazenbaker on drums) on Wednesday evening.

One of the many live music festivals that was cancelled for this year due to COVID-19 was the annual Smoked Country Jam Bluegrass Festival, which was to happen this weekend at Quiet Oaks Campground near Cross Fork (north of Renovo). In lieu of the actual festival, a special online video presentation featuring many of this year’s scheduled performers will appear on YouTube Saturday evening. The Smoked Country Jam Summer Solstice Celebration will begin at 7 p.m., and will feature performance videos and greetings from at least 15 different groups and performers, including Rapidgrass, Doug Forshey, The Millbillys, Williamson Branch, Valerie Smith, Fireside Collective, Van Wagner, Lockport Drifters, Jakobs Ferry Stragglers, Colebrook Road, Echo Valley, Texas Road Band, Mama Corn, Silas Powell & The Powell Family Band and Well Strung. As the Smoked Country Jam is a fundraiser for the Lupus Foundation, donations to the Lupus Foundation are encouraged at www.lupus.org/tristate/make-a-contribution. Festival and performer merchandise will be available for online purchase as well.
