Patched Together and Don Jamieson This Weekend!

Here is a listing of Altoona area live music happenings for the weekend and week of Friday, November 15 through Thursday, November 21.

As November inches closer toward Thanksgiving, an event that has become one of the annual live music highlights of November returns this weekend.

The 9th annual “Patched Together: A Day of Music to Benefit the Healing Patch” returns to Altoona’s Bavarian Aid Society on Saturday afternoon, to raise funds and awareness for the Home Nursing Agency’s Healing Patch program. The Healing Patch provides counseling and mentoring services to young people and their families who are dealing with the deaths of loved ones. This year’s “Patched Together” event will feature performances from eight acts beginning at 2 p.m. Performing in order will be new Altoona-based rock band Faded Flowers (featuring three former members of Rain Must Fall), acoustic duo Ed N’Born, the return of Chris Vipond & the Stanley Street Band, The Backyard Rockers, Jim Donovan & the Sun King Warriors, Greg Burley, Matt Otis & the Sound and Stephanie & the Wild Hearts. There will also be prize drawings, a basket raffle, children’s activities, food and refreshments, check presentations to the Healing Patch and more. Admission is $5 per person, with children ages 12 and under admitted for free. And those who purchase a souvenir Patched Together T-shirt (while supplies last) are admitted free.

For fans of the heavier side of rock with some comedy thrown in, McGarvey’s welcomes the return of renowned comedian Don Jamieson – best known as the co-host of VH-1’s heavy metal-themed comedy and talk show “That Metal Show” – on Saturday night. Don will anchor and emcee a night of hard-hitting music, featuring performances from Johnstown’s Darkness On The Radio, Altoona’s Railroad City Murder Machines, Pittsburgh’s Skell and northern Cambria County’s Negan. Don will also perform his annual stand-up comedy routine, featuring funny observations about the rock and music worlds, current events and more. The music and fun begin at 9 p.m.

For some mid-week musical relief, McGarvey’s also welcomes touring Austin, Texas-based rock band Hans Gruber and the Die Hards, headlining a triple-bill on Tuesday evening. The five-member group – who performs a mix of punk, ska and hardcore-flavored rock – is touring the country in support of their second full-length CD, “Hans Gruber and the Die Hards 2.” Opening the show will be local punk-rocking favorites X’s For Eyes and northcentral PA-based punk/hardcore rockers Suburban Downgrade. The music begins at 7 p.m.

And lastly, some fellow with the last name of Dylan will be gracing a nearby stage this weekend. Yes, the legendary Bob Dylan and his band perform at Eisenhower Auditorium on Penn State’s University Park campus. The Friday evening concert begins at 8 p.m.

For outdoor shows, in the event of inclement weather, please call or use social media to check ahead to make sure the show is still taking place, especially if you are driving any distance to attend.

Check out and support the area live music! And if you celebrate heavily while doing so, please designate a sober driver or call a taxi to get you home.
