Michale Graves, Mysterytrain and Thanksgiving Eve!

Here is a listing of Altoona area live music happenings for the weekend and week of Friday, November 22 through Thursday, November 28.

The return of a former Misfit and a Rex Foundation fundraiser highlight this weekend’s live music schedule, before numerous live music events on Wednesday night help ring in the Thanksgiving holiday.

Former Misfits singer Michale Graves – who fronted the popular and influential horror-punk group from 1995 to 2001 – wraps up his “American Monster” tour by returning to McGarvey’s on Saturday night. Graves and his band will perform material from his solo albums, as well as select songs he helped create while with the Misfits. Opening the show will be local “dadcore” favorites The Snipped and Pittsburgh’s Children Of October. The music gets under way at 7 p.m.

Also happening on Saturday, area jam music adventurists Mysterytrain will present their “Thanks-for-Giving” show at the PPG Pavilion near Tipton. The show is a fundraiser for the Rex Foundation, a charitable non-profit organization started by members of the Grateful Dead and friends in 1983 to support creative endeavors in the arts, sciences, and education. The doors will open at 2 p.m., with a full dinner served at 4 p.m., and music beginning at 5 p.m. Performing will be northern Cambria County-based improvisational folk-rockers the Nag Champions Mystery Band, followed by Sankertown-based bluegrass/jamgrass performers the High Street Drifters, and hosts Mysterytrain finishing out the night. The show is open to ages 18 and older, and admission/donation is $20 per person.

Still recognized as one of the busiest nights of the year for live music, Thanksgiving Eve on Wednesday night will feature a number of live music performances throughout the area. (See the listing below for the complete Thanksgiving Eve schedule.) The UVA Club will present a five-band/performer “Thanksgiving Bash” featuring area Beatles tribute act Helter Skelter 67-70 (who amazed the audience at Altoona’s Railroaders Museum in late June during the Pennsylvania Roundhouse Rally), This Albatross, Agent Smith, Matt Pletcher and Lauren & Joe. Admission is $10 per person, and the music begins at 7 p.m.

For outdoor shows, in the event of inclement weather, please call or use social media to check ahead to make sure the show is still taking place, especially if you are driving any distance to attend.

Check out and support the area live music! And if you celebrate heavily while doing so, please designate a sober driver or call a taxi to get you home.
