Motorcycle Thunder, Roundhouse, Make Music Day and More!

Here is a listing of Altoona area live music happenings for the weekend and week of Thursday, June 20 through Thursday, June 27.

It begins…Motorcycle thunder will reverberate through the area’s mountains and valleys this weekend, as Johnstown’s Thunder in the Valley and Altoona’s Pennsylvania Roundhouse Rally motorcycle rallies both start in full on Thursday. Ebensburg’s annual “Wheels and Wings” festivities happen on Thursday evening (June 20), with Ebensburg Bike Fest happening at Ebensburg’s American Legion Fairgrounds on Friday and Saturday nights. Lots of live music is happening with all of these events, including concerts by national recording groups Fuel and Kix at the Roundhouse Rally, and Firehouse at Thunder; see the listing below for the music schedules for all of them, and ride safe!

Music will be plentiful throughout Blair County on Friday, which is the worldwide “Make Music Day,” celebrated in more than 1,000 cities in 120 countries. Locally, “Make Music Day Altoona” will include live music at a number of locations throughout the area, with downtown Altoona’s Heritage Plaza musical slate even tying in with Friday’s Pennsylvania Roundhouse Rally happenings. See the listing below for all of the “Make Music Day Altoona” events, occurring at area libraries, parks, churches, public spaces and more!

If that’s not enough music for you, Maryland-based national recording act Jimmie’s Chicken Shack – the creators of the 1990s modern rock staple hits “High” and “Dropping Anchor” – takes the stage at McGarvey’s on Saturday night, with opening acts Maul and DoubleMotorcycle. The music starts at 8 p.m.

A special benefit event will take place Sunday afternoon in Gallitzin to help out a youngster recovering from cancer surgery. Rory Feathers, the 12-year-old son of area musician Jason Feathers, underwent surgery in Pittsburgh earlier this month to remove a tumor associated with thoracic neuroblastoma. The “Benefit for Rory Feathers” will take place at the Gallitzin Moose beginning at 2 p.m., and feature musical performances from Jae Smith and Rick Wertz. Basket raffles and other fundraising activities will take place. There is no admission charge, but those attending are encouraged to make a donation to help out Rory and his parents with medical expenses.

And for fans of bluegrass and folk music who are up for a roadtrip, the 17th annual Smoked Country Jam Bluegrass Festival happens Thursday through Saturday night at Quiet Oaks Campground in Cross Fork, PA (north of Renovo in Clinton County). This family-friendly event will feature performances from more than 20 different acts; including rising North Carolina progressive bluegrass ensemble the Fireside Collective, Grammy-winner Charles Humphrey and his North Carolina-based Songs From The Road Band, and regional favorites such as headliners The Hillbilly Gypsies, Mama Corn, Colebrook Road, Jakob’s Ferry Stragglers, Van Wagner and more. Proceeds from the festival benefit the Lupus Foundation of Pennsylvania. Food vendors and overnight camping (including showers) are available.

For outdoor shows, in the event of inclement weather, please call or use social media to check ahead to make sure the show is still taking place, especially if you are driving any distance to attend.

Check out and support the area live music! And if you celebrate heavily while doing so, please designate a sober driver or call a taxi to get you home.
