Memorial Day Weekend Live Music Everywhere!

Here is a listing of Altoona area live music happenings for the weekend and week of Friday, May 24 through Thursday, May 30.

Memorial Day Weekend 2019 presents a wide assortment of special live music activities and events to check out.

For fans of the Beatles, Altitude Entertainment presents “And In the End: A Community Concert Celebrating Abbey Road at 50” on Friday evening at Altoona’s historic Mishler Theatre. The celebration of the Fab Four is produced by Will Jones, with musical direction by Rick Wertz. A number of vocal performers will take the stage, backed by the Altitude Rock Ensemble. Tickets are $16 plus a Mishler handling fee.

Legends Of Rock Productions and WOWY 97.1 present rock’n’roll legends the Beach Boys on Sunday evening at Altoona’s Jaffa Shrine. The concert starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available through the Jaffa Shrine’s website or via ticket broker Vendini.

For those whose mantra is “Life is short, eat the bacon,” Altoona’s Railroaders Museum will host the inaugural Bacon N’Bourbon Fest on Saturday afternoon. The event runs from 1 to 4 p.m., and will feature an assortment of bacon-adorned edibles from several food vendors, along with bourbon sampling from several area distilleries and vendors. Live music will provided by Matt Pletcher. Proceeds from the event will benefit Ronald McDonald House Mid-Penn Region’s Rooms for Ronald. Admission is $45 for VIP tickets, and $25 for public tickets. The event is open to folks 21 years of age or older.

Area folk group Simple Gifts again presents their annual Folk College event this weekend on the campus of Juniata College in Huntingdon. The event starts Friday and runs through Sunday afternoon, with most activities taking place at the college’s Halbritter Center for the Performing Arts. Multiple workshops involving a variety of instruments and musical styles will take place during the daytime, with evening concerts on Friday and Saturday which are open to the public. (For a listing of concert performers, see the listing below.) For more information about Folk College, see the website www.folkcollege.com.

A short road trip to Indiana will take you to the annual Westsylvania Jazz & Blues Festival, which takes place at IRMC Park near downtown Indiana. The event starts on Friday night with a kickoff concert featuring Left Lane Cruiser and Post Traumatik, and continues on Saturday with an assortment of jazz and blues performers; headlined by jazz performer Dwayne Dolphin and blues performer Vanessa Collier. Admission is free.

And claiming to be one of the birthplaces of Memorial Day, Boalsburg will again celebrate the holiday throughout the weekend with a variety of activities, culminating on Monday with musical entertainment at several sites, the Boalsburg Fire Company’s Carnival, and the day-ending memorial service at Boalsburg Cemetery beginning at 6 p.m. See the listing below for Monday’s entertainment lineup; admission is free, and $5 parking is available near Boal Museum and at the Pennsylvania Military Museum.

On a final note, the weekly Thursday Open Stage Night at Altoona’s Greenbean Coffee House will take the summer off, but return on Thursday, September 12. But in the interim, McGarvey’s will host an adult Open Mic Night on Thursday evenings through the summer. Hosted by Open Stage’s Garrison Bailey, the open stage will run from 6 to 9 p.m.

For outdoor shows, in the event of inclement weather, please call or use social media to check ahead to make sure the show is still taking place, especially if you are driving any distance to attend.

Check out and support the area live music! And if you celebrate heavily while doing so, please designate a sober driver or call a taxi to get you home.
