Arts Festival, SpringFest, Jimmy Mowery and Schism This Weekend!

Here is a listing of Altoona area live music happenings for the weekend and week of Friday, May 17 through Thursday, May 23.

Live music fans will have plenty to savor around the area this weekend, with outdoor and indoor live music events to pick from.

One of Spring’s biggest highlights in this part of the world is the annual Blair County Arts Festival at Penn State Altoona. This year’s Arts Festival happens on Saturday and Sunday, and will again feature a variety of art exhibits, arts and crafts vendors, the Food Court, and a variety of live performances spanning dance to music to comedy and more. See the listing below for the music schedule for both days. Admission to the festival itself is free, but a small donation will be collected for parking, with proceeds helping to support the event. Fans of the Arts Festival will want to savor this year’s event, as the festival will go on temporary hiatus after this year while the Blair County Arts Foundation devotes its energies toward improvements at the Mishler Theatre.

The third annual Historic Hollidaysburg SpringFest will take place throughout Saturday in downtown Hollidaysburg. The event will feature various displays from local businesses and organizations, food vendors, and live music. See the listing below for the event’s music schedule.

One of the performers during Hollidaysburg SpringFest will be local native and recent NBC “The Voice” contestant Jimmy Mowery, who is back in the area this weekend and performing two shows in honor of everyone who voted for him and supported him during his recent run on “The Voice.” Jimmy will perform at 4 p.m. Saturday at SpringFest, and will also play on Friday night at the Altoona Primanti Bros. location starting at 8 p.m. Those wishing to attend Friday’s performance may want to arrive early to get a seat, as a large turnout is likely.

And for fans of progressive hard rockers Tool, New York City-based national touring Tool tribute group Schism is performing at McGarvey’s on Saturday night. Started in 2001, Schism is the world’s first and longest-running national Tool tribute, and is the only Tool tribute endorsed on Tool’s websites. The show begins at 7 p.m., and will feature local openers Ed N’Born plus the combined forces of local hard rock groups Maul and Negan performing an Alice In Chains tribute set. Tickets for this event are sold out, though.

For outdoor shows, in the event of inclement weather, please call or use social media to check ahead to make sure the show is still taking place, especially if you are driving any distance to attend.

Check out and support the area live music! And if you celebrate heavily while doing so, please designate a sober driver or call a taxi to get you home.
