Alive at Five Returns, Happy Valley Music Fest This Weekend!

Here is a listing of Altoona area live music happenings for the weekend and week of Friday, May 31 through Thursday, June 6.

Among the anticipated highlights this weekend is the return of the “Alive at Five” Summer Concert Series at Altoona’s Railroaders Museum on Friday evening. Officially kicking off this year’s series will be the return of New York-based AC/DC tribute Live Wire, who last appeared on the railcar stage in 2016. Live Wire will celebrate the AC/DC catalog with music from both the Bon Scott and Brian Johnson eras. Opening will be Johnstown hard rockers Octane. The music starts at 6 p.m., and tickets are $15 per person at the gate.

National recording group 10,000 Maniacs and JJ Grey & Mofro will be the headliners during this weekend’s annual Happy Valley Music Fest in downtown State College, taking place Friday night and Saturday. Music will happen on two stages situated along the 200 block of Allen Street. Popular during the 1980s and 1990s, alternative rock/pop group 10,000 Maniacs will headline Friday’s music, while JJ Grey & Mofro will cap Saturday’s music. Other anticipated highlights of this year’s festival will be Rusted Root members Michael Glabicki & Dirk Miller, New Orleans-based brass/funk rockers Bonerama performing a special Led Zeppelin set, young Williamsport-based blues guitarist Gabe Stillman – the Gibson Guitar Award winner during this year’s International Blues Challenge in Memphis – and his band, local favorites Miss Melanie & the Valley Rats and more. (See the listing below for the event’s full schedule.) Admission is $15 for a Friday pass, $25 for a Saturday pass, or $30 for an entire weekend pass. Food vendors and a beer garden will be available.

The Great Eastern Arts Festival returns to Tenley Park in Everett on Saturday afternoon, featuring food and craft vendors, children’s activities, tables from nonprofit organizations and live music from the bands Bad Luck Lover Boys and Washington Slept Here. The event runs from 1 to 7 p.m., and admission is free.

The Four Dees Lounge will host a special triple-bill on Friday night spotlighting area hip-hop, soul and R&B music. Johnstown’s Witness 159 (featuring Altoona’s Randy Servello on drums), Pana Zeke (performing with Rik Golden’s band) and Altoona’s PennSOULvania will provide the music starting at 10 p.m.

Altoona’s Railroad City Brewing Company will feature a special performance on Saturday evening, as Longview, Washington native Casey Walke – now calling State College his home base – will perform an acoustic show starting at 7 p.m. His performance incarnation, Spaces In Between, will showcase Casey’s original song creations spanning three albums, which mix ambitious and experimental arrangements with his own myriad of vocal expression.

And McGarvey’s will host a rare Sunday evening band triple-bill, as traveling horror punk rockers The Living Deads return. Nomadic performers who have toured continuously around North America and the world for the past eight years, The Living Deads – singer and upright bass player Symphony Tidwell and drummer, acoustic guitarist and singer Randee McKnight – will display their edgy brand of punk rock, including their own original songs plus select covers, with an emphasis on tunes from deceased musicians. Opening the night will be local groups the Railroad City Murder Machines and Ben Dumm & the Prostitutes. The music starts at 7 p.m.

For outdoor shows, in the event of inclement weather, please call or use social media to check ahead to make sure the show is still taking place, especially if you are driving any distance to attend.

Check out and support the area live music! And if you celebrate heavily while doing so, please designate a sober driver or call a taxi to get you home.
