Striking Chords, Outdoor Fall Fest Finales This Weekend!

Here is a listing of Altoona area live music happenings for the weekend and week of Friday, October 19 through Thursday, October 25.

One of the weekend’s music event highlights happens on Friday night, as the 7th annual Striking Chords Against Cancer benefit moves indoors to the Jaffa Shrine, after spending its first six years outdoors at the Railroaders Museum. Again, the Striking Chords event will raise money for the American Cancer Society, and feature a mixture of live bands and acoustic acts. See the listing below for this year’s entertainers. The music begins at 6 p.m.; admission is $10 per person.

As colder fall weather has arrived in the region, the last of the area outdoor fall festivals happen this weekend before everything moves back indoors for winter season. Hollidaysburg’s annual Pumpkinfest takes place in downtown Hollidaysburg on Saturday; this year’s musical entertainment includes Centre County bluegrass/folk group The Tussey Mountain Moonshiners at 10 a.m., the Joy Drummers at 1 p.m. and local favorites Zach Wade & the Good Grief beginning at 2 p.m. Admission to the festival is free.

For those up for a roadtrip, Fulton County features the annual Fulton Fall Folk Festival, with events happening throughout the county. Part of the festivities center on Akersville (near Breezewood), where the annual Akersville Fall Festival happens on Friday and Saturday. This festival features more than 50 vendors, food and refreshments, and live folk and gospel music both days. See the listing below for each day’s scheduled performers. An Open Stage event happens at the Hustontown Fire Company on Saturday evening, and area country favorites Chris Woodward & Shindiggin’ help finish out the festival on Sunday afternoon at Stone Hollow Farm south of McConnellsburg.

For local oldies enthusiasts, 1960s hitmakers Gary Lewis & the Playboys perform a matinee show on Sunday afternoon at the Mishler Theatre, presented by JD Promotions. Tickets are $27 plus a $3 box office fee. The concert begins at 2 p.m.

And the first of the Halloween parties begin this weekend; many more will likely be on the agenda for next weekend.

For outdoor shows, in the event of inclement weather, please call or use social media to check ahead to make sure the show is still taking place, especially if you are driving any distance to attend.

Check out and support the area live music! And if you celebrate heavily while doing so, please designate a sober driver or call a taxi to get you home.
