Ivyside Off the Rails, A Final Flight, Uke Soiree This Weekend!

Here is a listing of Altoona area live music happenings for the weekend and week of Friday, April 20 through Thursday, April 26.

Among the notable live music events taking place this weekend is the second annual “Ivyside Off the Rails: Glow On” music and arts festival, happening Sunday evening at Altoona’s Railroaders Museum. Sponsored by Penn State Altoona’s Campus Activities Board (C.A.B.), the event will feature a variety of student art-related activities, as well as live music on the flatcar stage. Kicking off the music at 6:30 p.m. will be local rock group The Roof, followed by Danish pop/punk rock trio New Politics. Formed in 2009, New Politics has issued four albums to date; two with RCA Records and their latest two with DCD2/Warner Bros. Records. Their sound merges catchy pop melodies with elements of punk, rock and touches of electronica. The group has scored several chart singles, including “Harlem,” “Tonight You’re Perfect” and “Yeah Yeah Yeah.” Headlining the concert will be Brick Squad Monopoly/Atlantic Records rap performer Waka Flocka, who first rose to fame in 2009 with the successful chart singles “O Let’s Do It,” “Hard in da Paint” and the Billboard Hot 100 top 20 single “No Hands,” which also won the 2011 BET Award for Best Collaboration. Also known as Waka Flocka Flame, he will bring a hard-edged brand of rap and hip-hop to the stage. Food and refreshments will be available. Tickets cost $10 for Penn State Altoona students, and $20 for the general public. No outside food or drinks are permitted on the grounds, no bags larger than a clutch permitted, and minors must be accompanied by an authorized adult.

Popular Altoona-based rock and party band Flight 19 is bringing their nearly 20-year run on area stages to a close, and the group will step onto the stage of the Four Dees Lounge for the final time on Saturday night. The show will feature a reunion of past band members on the stage, and the group will perform favorites from throughout their career. The show begins at 10:30 p.m. The Flight 19 “Party Plane” will then touch down for their final public concert performance at downtown Altoona’s Heritage Plaza on Friday evening, June 8.

And ukulele enthusiasts from near and far will converge on Laurel Lodge on Sugar Run Road for the fifth annual Allegheny Ukulele Soiree, which begins Friday evening and continues through Sunday. The event will feature various ukulele skill workshops, open mics and jam sessions, vendors, and nightly concerts featuring several renowned ukulele performers. Performers this year include Craig Chee & Sarah Maisel, Danielle Ate the Sandwich, Jim D’Ville, The Dirty Hillers, and Mim of Mim’s Ukes. Tickets are sold out for this event, which is sponsored by the Allegheny Ukulele Kollective.

For outdoor shows, in the event of inclement weather, please call or use social media to check ahead to make sure the show is still taking place, especially if you are driving any distance to attend.

Check out and support the area live music! And if you celebrate heavily while doing so, please designate a sober driver or call a taxi to get you home.
