St. Paddy’s Weekend!

Here is a listing of Altoona area live music happenings for the weekend and week of Friday, March 16 through Thursday, March 22.

St. Patrick’s Day is the dominant theme of this weekend, with plenty of St. Patrick’s-themed parties and entertainment happening on area stages. And even if it isn’t an ‘official’ St. Patrick’s event, you can still expect to see plenty of green attire and Irish-inspired merriment at nearly every live music event this weekend.

Of course, two popular annual St. Patrick’s events make their return. The annual Mac’s Irish Bash takes place at the Jaffa Shrine on Friday evening, featuring Irish food, drink and merriment, plus live music from Johnstown Irish/folk favorites Tree and Altoona dance party juggernaut Shallow 9. The festivities begin at 6 p.m. Proceeds benefit the McEldowney Academic Scholarship Fund. Tickets are reportedly sold out for this event.

And the Gallitzin Fire Company presents their 10th annual St. Patrick’s Day Party at the Gallitzin American Legion’s Oriental Ballroom in Gallitzin. Doors open at 4 p.m., with music starting at 5 p.m. This year’s musical lineup starts with local Irish folk-rock favorites Full Kilt, followed by Maryland-based Irish entertainer Seamus Kennedy and his band, and Hot Wax concluding the night. Tickets are reportedly sold out for this event.

And following tradition, Zach’s Sports and Spirits will again provide St. Patrick’s weekend entertainment, with Full Kilt performing on Friday evening and Conner Gilbert on Saturday. Music begins at 8 p.m. both nights.

Beyond the St. Patrick’s festivities, a benefit to help out the surviving family of an area musician will take place on Sunday afternoon at the Altoona Grand Hotel. The “Benefit for Terry Croft’s Family” will start at 2 p.m., and raise funds to help with final expenses following Terry Croft’s passing on February 27. Donating their talents to this benefit will be Born & the Beanstalk, R2B2, Rokkandy, the Backyard Rockers, Mama Corn and Bone Jacked. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted at the door.

And McGarvey’s welcomes two new acts to its stage this weekend. From the Pittsburgh area, the Jakobs Ferry Stragglers will bring their blend of Appalachian folk, bluegrass and string music to McGarvey’s on Friday night. Since 2014, this group has become well-known throughout the region with appearances at such events as The Three Rivers Arts Festival, Flood City Music Festival, Whiskey Rebellion Festival, Hickory Fest, Smoked Country Jam, Great Blue Heron Festival and more. And on Saturday night, Nashville’s Nathan Kalish & the Last Callers will introduce their blend of country, Americana, psychedelia and rock’n’roll. Both shows begin at 10:30 p.m.

Lastly, a shameless plug…It was on March 8, 1998, that local music began to be heard Sunday nights on local radio airwaves, as the “Backyard Rocker” made its debut as a weekly one-hour program on WBXQ “Q94” FM. Twenty years (and two radio stations) later, the program has morphed into the “Homegrown Rocker,” and now airs two hours of music from local and regional Pennsylvania bands and artists each Sunday night on WQCK, “105.9 Qwik-Rock” FM in State College. The official 20th Anniversary Special edition of the “Homegrown Rocker” will air this Sunday night, March 18, starting at 8 p.m., and will feature a variety of show highlights from the first 20 years – including a teenaged Elizabeth Hale (“Lzzy” Hale of Halestorm) performing a keyboard ballad live on the air, a monstrous eight-minute acoustic jam session treatment of a Motorhead classic from 2005, an excerpt from a show edition from last summer that blended a band guest interview with a fishing adventure, and more. So if you are near an FM radio on Sunday evening, check out the “Homegrown Rocker” 20th Anniversary Special!

For outdoor shows, in the event of inclement weather, please call or use social media to check ahead to make sure the show is still taking place, especially if you are driving any distance to attend.

Check out and support the area live music! And if you celebrate heavily while doing so, please designate a sober driver or call a taxi to get you home.
