Deluge causes flash flooding in South

HUNTSVILLE — Parts of the Deep South are experiencing flash flooding and other problems from heavy rains.

Floodwaters covered roads on Wednesday in parts of eastern Mississippi and northern Alabama. In northwest Georgia, a mudslide was reported Wednesday beside a gas station in Dade County.

Flood watches and warnings were in place for the northern parts of Alabama, Mississippi, and Georgia.

Man charged with hate crimes

SALT LAKE CITY — The U.S. government has charged a Utah man with a hate crime for his attack last year on three men who authorities say he targeted because they were Mexican.

Alan Dale Covington was indicted Wednesday on accusations that he attacked the men with a metal pole at a Salt Lake City tire shop and shouted that he wanted to “kill Mexicans.” The victims survived but two of them suffered serious injuries. The incident occurred Nov. 27, 2018.

TENNESSEE

Shooting suspect objects to evidence

NASHVILLE — The man accused of fatally shooting a woman and wounding seven people at a church in September 2017 is objecting to using evidence from his cellphone.

Emanuel Kidega Samson made his first public court appearance Wednesday during a Davidson County Criminal Court hearing. The 27-year-old faces a 43-count indictment, including a first-degree murder charge, in the shooting at Burnette Chapel Church of Christ.
