Man with knife arrested at airport

THE HAGUE — Military police in the Netherlands have arrested a man armed with a knife at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport.

Military police spokeswoman Joanna Helmonds said the man allegedly threatened passers-by on Thursday night before officers detained him. Nobody was injured.


Airstrikes conducted against PKK in Iraq

ANKARA — Turkey’s Defense Ministry said the military has conducted airstrikes against Kurdish rebel targets in Iraq’s Sinjar and Mount Karajak regions.

A ministry statement, carried by state-run Anadolu Agency, said jets on Thursday targeted shelters, caves, tunnels and depots used by the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, which sent fighters to Sinjar to help Iraqi Kurds fight the Islamic State group there.


Suspected jihadists kill 42 in camps

BAMAKO — A Tuareg leader said suspected jihadists on motorcycles have killed at least 42 people in Mali’s eastern Menaka region during a series of attacks on their nomadic camps.

Moussa Ag Acharatoumane of theTuareg self-defense group said Thursday that children as young as 8 were among the victims of the attacks Tuesday and Wednesday. The region in the sprawling West African nation is home to a number of extremist groups, including those with links to Islamic State militants.
