Officer killed after traffic stop
ATLANTA — Authorities said a Georgia police officer and a suspect have both died after a traffic stop led to a foot chase and shooting.
According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, DeKalb County police Chief James Conroy said at a news conference that the unidentified officer and suspect died at an Atlanta hospital following the shooting Thursday evening just east of Atlanta.
Death row inmate seeks execution
JACKSON — A Mississippi judge will decide whether a death row inmate is competent to waive all his appeals and request execution.
The state Supreme Court ruled Thursday that a circuit judge must conduct the examination in the case of David Cox.
Cox wrote to the state’s chief justice in August saying he is unhappy with his ongoing appeals and wanted the state to set his execution date.
Human heart prompts flight to return
SEATTLE — Southwest Airlines said a Dallas-bound flight returned to Seattle last weekend because a human heart was left onboard.
The Seattle Times reported that Flight 3606 arrived in Seattle from Sacramento, California. Someone forgot to unload the heart before the plane left for Dallas, and the captain announced over Idaho they were turning back.
The heart was being sent to a tissue processor to recover a valve for use in a future transplant.
