Best-selling Chinese novelist Louis Cha

HONG KONG — Louis Cha, journalist and best-selling Chinese martial arts novelist, has died at age 94.

The Hong Kong newspaper Ming Pao Daily News, which was founded by Cha, said he passed away Tuesday.

Cha’s novels about ancient Chinese swordsmen have sold millions and are among the most widely read in the world. They inspired film and TV adaptations, comics and videogames, and they greatly influenced Hong Kong popular culture.

Cha was born in 1924 in Hangzhou and graduated from the Law School of Suzhou in 1948. He began work as a journalist in 1947 to support his studies.

Cha’s first novel, “The Book and the Sword,” became an instant hit. He went on to write 14 martial arts novels, often under the pen name Jin Yong.
