Governor candidate charged in plot

OKLAHOMA CITY — An Oklahoma zookeeper at an exotic animal park and candidate for governor earlier this year has been charged in a murder-for-hire scheme alleging he tried to hire someone to kill a Florida woman, federal prosecutors announced on Friday.

Joseph Maldonado-Passage, 55, also known as “Joe Exotic,” was indicted on two counts of hiring a person to commit murder in federal court in Oklahoma City.

Woman mistakes dynamite for candle

BRIDGEPORT — A Connecticut woman mistook a stick of dynamite for a candle during a power outage and suffered severe hand injuries, authorities said Friday.

After the power went out in a thunderstorm Thursday night, the woman recalled what she thought were candles left in the basement by the previous residents. A quarter stick of dynamite exploded in her hand, leaving her at risk of losing one or more of her fingers and also causing severe injuries to her face, city officials said.

Officer in shooting to be charged

DALLAS — A white Dallas police officer who said she mistook a black neighbor’s apartment for her own and then fatally shot that person will be charged with manslaughter, police said Friday.

It was not clear how the officer may have entered 26-year-old Botham Jean’s apartment late Thursday.
