Civil rights veteran honored

JACKSON — Democratic U.S. Rep. John Lewis of Georgia will speak at the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum, months after refusing to join President Donald Trump there.

Friends of Mississippi Civil Rights Inc. announced Tuesday it will give awards to Lewis, who helped lead the historic 1965 march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabam. Events are set for Feb. 23 and 24 at the museum.

Mormon church appoints new president

SALT LAKE CITY — A 93-year-old former heart surgeon with three decades of experience with the Mormon church’s top leadership panel was officially named the faith’s president.

High-ranking Mormon D. Todd Christofferson announced the selection of Russell M. Nelson as president Tuesday in an address from Salt Lake City that broadcast to Mormons around the world.

University investigates racist signs

COLUMBIA — Officials at the University of South Carolina are investigating who placed two flyers blaming black people for the election of Donald Trump as president over photos of historically important black South Carolinians. Both signs said Trump was elected because black people voted for Hillary Clinton.
