Michael Jude Bender

April 14, 1979 – Feb. 17, 2017

Michael Jude Bender, 37, Morehead City, N.C., passed away unexpectedly on Friday at his residence.

He was born in Altoona, son of William C. Bender and Linda “Pugh” Scott.

Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth Kofroth-Bender; a son, Jack Allen Bender, whom he adored; his mother and stepfather: Linda and Randy Scott of Winston-Salem, N.C.; three sisters: Sara Bender of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Kelsey and Karlie Bender, both of Altoona; three brothers: Zachary Scott of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Kyler and Kolin Bender, both of Altoona; his grandparents: William and M. Frances Pugh of High Point, N.C., and Frank and Pallett Glasshauser of Altoona; his stepmother, Barbara White of Altoona; a brother-in-law, Christopher Ancrum in Ireland, and family, Ava and Aubree Bender of Winston-Salem, N.C.; a host of aunts, uncles and cousins; and numerous friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, William; and his paternal grandparents: William H. and Anna Gertrude “Nanny” Bender.

Known as “Bender” to his friends, he was a 1997 graduate of Robert B. Glenn High School, Kernersville, N.C., and he attended Guilford Technical Community College. He was employed as an insurance agent for BCBS.

He was an avid fisherman and he loved the water. He was also a dedicated fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates and the Carolina Hurricanes.

Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24, 2017, and from 11 a.m. until the noon funeral service, Saturday, Feb. 25, 2017, at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home, Winston-Salem, N.C.
