Wounded Eagles fight, fall short

TYRONE — Tyrone is going through a rugged stretch of its schedule while battling injuries to some key players. The Golden Eagles played Bellefonte last week, Bald Eagle Area Friday night and take on Clearfield next week.

The Golden Eagles hung tough with BEA early, but the visitors pulled away via the running and passing of quarterback Jaden Jones, who had three touchdown passes and a running TD. The BEA defense held Tyrone to six first downs in a 31-0 win on homecoming at Gray-Vets Memorial Field.

Play of the game: BEA’s Matt Reese made a diving catch of a 28-yard Kaden Bittinger halfback pass to the Tyrone 8 late in the first half.

Player of the game: BEA quarterback Jaden Jones completed 13 of 17 pass for 111 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. He ran for 138 yards on 14 carries, gaining 107 yards in the second half, and scored a touchdown.

Unsung hero(es): The BEA defense limited Tyrone to 100 total yards and 19 yards rushing.

Most vital statistic(s): BEA amassed 405 total yards.

Bald Eagle Area coach Jesse Nagle: “The defense played very well. The last couple weeks we’ve been playing very well defensively. (Jones) makes some plays you scratch your head at. There were some plays I was thinking he was down, and then he gets out. With him at the helm, we’re a completely different team.”

Tyrone coach John Franco: “Number 12 (Jones) is the difference. That kid is outstanding. As long as he’s playing for them, boy, I’ll tell you what, they’re formidable. You can’t defend him. We had guys that were assigned to him, and they get to him, and they miss him. I tip my hat to him.”

Notable: Reagan Wood was announced as the homecoming queen before the game. … BEA sacked Tyrone quarterback Brandon Lucas five times. … Tyrone’s Noah Zimmerman returned from an injury, played defense and suffered another injury. … Tyrone’s Damon Gripp intercepted Jones in the first half. … BEA’s Carter Stere kicked a 25-yard field goal with 3:50 remaining in the game.

Next week: Bald Eagle Area hosts Huntingdon next Friday. Tyrone visits Clearfield.
