Golden Eagles hold on for win over pesky P-O

TYRONE — The fire whistle sounded near Tyrone’s Gray-Vets Memorial Field in the fourth quarter on Friday night’s game against Philipsburg-Osceola in response to a wreck on Route 350.

Tyrone junior quarterback Brandon Lucas came to his team’s rescue much earlier in a 22-16 win over the upset-minded Mounties.

P-O led, 16-7, at halftime, but Lucas shined in a rainy second half after both Golden Eagle running backs, Noah Zimmerman and Clifford Beck, suffered injuries.

Play of the game: Brandon Lucas broke tackles en route to a 13-yard go-ahead touchdown run with 8:11 left in the game.

Player of the game: Lucas was Tyrone’s ball carrier after Noah Zimmerman left with an injury in the second half. Lucas scored all three touchdowns and ran for 92 yards on 13 carries in the second half after totaling minus-4 in the first half. He was 6-of-7 passing in the second half for 78 yards, finishing 10-of-15 for 138. He also broke up Ryan Whitehead’s pass in the end zone on fourth-and-goal at the 6 with 3:32 left.

Unsung hero(es): Tyrone wide receiver Damon Gripp caught eight passes for 100 yards. Tyrone 5-10, 160-pound defensive end Matthew Clifton made many big tackles.

Most vital statistic(s): P-O was penalized seven times for 68 yards.

P-O coach Brian McGonigal: “There were some horrible calls our way. I feel bad for the kids. I’m frustrated for our kids because they had that one tonight. We had three passes dropped in the end zone for touchdowns. And it seemed like every time Tyrone needed a play, they got a call from the official, which was unfortunate for the kids.”

Tyrone coach John Franco: “I’m really excited that we were able to get that win because we had so many injuries in that game. I mean we didn’t have a backfield. We were making plays up and making receivers running backs just to get through. Our top three backs were gone. (Lucas) is a heck of a runner. He’s a playmaker.”

Tyrone QB Brandon Lucas: “My linemen did a terrific job today. My wide receivers did a great job. It was an all-around good team win. I told Coach I’m ready for whatever job he needs me to do.”

Notable: Whitehead completed 15-of-22 for 200 yards and a TD. All five of his receivers caught three passes. … P-O running back Kaleb Stamm had 29 carries for 129 yards and a TD. … P-O kicker Aaron Parks kicked a 25-yard field goal in the second quarter. … P-O outgained Tyrone, 356-282.

Next week: Philipsburg-Osceola hosts Bishop Carroll next Friday. Tyrone hosts Bellefonte.

Records: Philipsburg-Osceola (1-3), Tyrone (2-2)
