Cambria Heights picks up big road ‘W’

JOHNSTOWN — Cambria Heights roared back from an early deficit at Bishop McCort on Friday night thanks to a powerful ground game and strong defense that propelled the Highlanders to a convincing 37-15 victory.

Play of the game: Cambria Heights’s Chris Flis blocked a Bishop McCort punt in the end zone for a second-quarter safety that put the Highlanders up 9-7. Cambria Heights scored a touchdown on the ensuing possession after the free kick and never trailed again.

Player of the game: Cambria Heights fullback Tyler Trybus rushed for a game-high 177 yards and two touchdowns on 35 carries.

Unsung hero(es): Cambria Heights senior offensive linemen Noah Donahue and Logan Strittmatter. “Our offensive line did a fantastic job, and these guys are the leaders,” Highlanders coach Jarrod Lewis said.

Most vital statistic: Cambria Heights gained 368 of its 374 total yards on the ground and dominated the time of possession 34:45 to 13:15 while running 40 more offensive plays than Bishop McCort.

Cambria Heights coach Jarrod Lewis: “Our offensive line played great. We had a nice game running inside and outside, and the backs and receivers blocked as well as the line. Our kids had the best week of practice all year, and it showed tonight.”

Bishop McCort coach Brian Basile: “They (Cambria Heights) beat us in all phases of the game. Give them credit, they took it to us.”

Cambria Heights fullback Tyler Trybus: “I couldn’t have done it without my offensive line.” “We worked hard all week and really wanted this win.”

Notable: Jared Fox was a second Highlander back over the century mark with 119 yards and two scores on 13 carries. Bishop McCort was limited to 141 total yards and did not get a first down in the second half. Brett Harrison was 5 of 5 on extra points for Cambria Heights.
