Mustangs’ offense, defense dominate in win

NANTY GLO — Portage continued its dominant winning streak over Blacklick Valley, which spans over 10 years, as the Mustangs claimed a convincing win at McMullen Memorial Field Friday night, 48-0.

The Mustang defense was on display as Portage forced five turnovers in the win. Holding the ball in their possession for most of the game, the Mustangs racked up 354 yards on the ground in the win.

Player of the game: Portage quarterback Connor Price, who rushed for 46 yards, threw 6-for-10 for 43 yards and scored two touchdowns. He returned the opening kickoff of the second half 88 yards for the touchdown.

Play of the game: Portage defensive end Marcus Douglas recovered the wild snap over the head of Blacklick Valley quarterback in the endzone to give the Mustangs a 13-0 lead in the second quarter.

Usung hero: Portage corner Kaden Claar got on the positive side of receiver Kolten Syzmusiak and snatched the interception to set up a Mustang scoring drive in the second quarter.

Most vital statistics: Portage forced five turnovers and held the Vikings to 54 total yards.

Portage coach Gary Gouse: “We have injuries, and I was worried about our line. But we fired on all cylinders on all three sides of the game.”

Portage quarterback Connor Price: “We learned that we had to stress defense a lot. Last year, we didn’t have a very strong defensive year. We’ve worked on it a lot this summer. We practice a lot. We executed this game and came out on top.”

Portage defensive end Marcus Douglas: “I think we all just trust each other so much and we all do our role. We’re able to just fly around and do our jobs.”

Blacklick Valley coach Rich Price: “We didn’t play well. That’s the bottom line. Anytime you play a perennial playoff team like Portage, you have to play clean football. We didn’t.”
