Central QB duo too much for Northern Bedford ‘D’

Photos for the Mirror by J.D. Cavrich Northern Bedford’s Dalton Smith breaks up a pass intended for either Central’s Josh Biesinger (9) or Hunter Klotz Friday night in Roaring Spring.

ROARING SPRING — Central unveiled a two-quarterback offense Friday night that could produce great things for the Scarlet Dragons this season.

With freshman Jeff Hoenstine passing for 112 yards and two touchdowns, and also rushing for two more, and senior Braden Kitt rushing for 121 yards on 10 carries and two scores, Central built a 35-0 lead and rolled to a 49-14 non-conference win over Northern Bedford in the season opener at the Roaring Spring Athletic Field.

Hoenstine scored on runs of 29 yards and 1 yard, while also throwing scoring passes of 10 yards to Ben McConahy and four yards to Hunter Klotz. Kitt scored on runs of 69 yards and 1 yard.

“I think that’s going to be one of the strengths of our game,” Central coach Dave Baker said of the two-quarterback format. “They give us a variety of things that we can do there.”

Play of the game: Kitt broke off a 69-yard touchdown run off left tackle with 4:28 left in the first quarter, helping Central to a 14-0 lead.

Player(s) of the game: It’s not a copout to name both Kitt and Hoenstine.

Unsung hero(es): Central’s Demetrious Harbaugh recovered two fumbles and Klotz another — turnovers that led directly to touchdowns for the Scarlet Dragons.

Most vital statistic(s): Central rolled up 400 yards in total offense, with Kitt accounting for 191 yards rushing, passing, and receiving, and Hoenstine accounting for 175 in those three categories.

Central coach Dave Baker: “We got some good things to happen to us early. We got up on them quickly, and that sort of got us on a little bit of a roll.”

Northern Bedford coach Garry Black: “You can’t win a game when you fumble a kickoff, fumble a punt, and fumble on a drive. Those were three offensive possessions that we gave to Central. We were really sloppy tonight. We’ve got to clean things up if we want to become a better football team.”

Central quarterback Braden Kitt: “Overall, we played hard. Jeff (Hoenstine) came in and did a great job at quarterback. We all played well and did what the coaches asked, and came out with a win.”

Central quarterback Jeff Hoenstine: “I thought we both (himself and Kitt) did a great job today at quarterback. I just went out there like it was any other game, trusting my receivers to make plays, and I knew that good things would happen.”

Notable: Kitt also had an interception in the defensive secondary for Central … Northern Bedford junior back Dalton Smith rushed for 104 yards on 21 carries and a touchdown. “I thought he ran well,” Black said of Smith … The mercy-rule clock was kicked into effect with 6:27 left in the game.

Records: Northern Bedford (0-1), Central (1-0).

Next week: Northern Bedford hosts Southern Huntingdon in an Inter-County Conference game Thursday night; Central visits Tyrone in a Mountain League matchup Friday night.
