Altoona coaching job opens

The Altoona Mountain Lion football program could start the 2019 season with a new coach.

The Altoona Area School Board opened up the high school head football coach position with a vote of 7-2 Monday. Current coach Nick Felus held the position since 2016. Although his position is now open, he can re-apply.

School board member Ed Kreuz’s motion to open the position was supported by board president Dutch Brennan, Vice President Wayne Hippo, Bill Ceglar, Kelly Irwin Adams, Rick Hoover and Dave Francis.

Ron Johnston and Sharon Bream cast no votes.

The Mountain Lions have gone 7-23 in Felus’ three seasons, going 2-8, 2-8 and 3-7 last season.

“I’m really struggling with this,” Bream said, unsure of her vote before deciding to vote against opening the position.

Board members declined comment after the meeting and Athletic Director Phil Riccio was not present.

Hoover said publicly before the vote was taken that it was not about wins and losses.

“I am a proud alumnus of Altoona,” Hoover said. “I played football here. I want everyone to know that nobody on this board cares about wins and losses. We’d like to see wins for the kids’ sake, but what we care about is raising positive productive members of society who grow up looking back having positive thoughts. No matter how this vote goes, it’s not about wins and losses.”
