McGhee, Akers, Pfister among All-State honorees

Bishop Guilfoyle senior and West Virginia commit Kolton McGhee was selected to the 2018 American Family Insurance All-USA Pennsylvania Football team for the second consecutive year Thursday.

“I was pretty excited,” McGhee said. “Making it last year as a junior it was cool, and getting elected again was great, because you’re picked out of all classifications through the whole state. It’s one of my top achievements.”

McGhee is the only special teamer to make the team, announced by the USA Today. Players on the team came from across Pennsylvania, and all six classifications were put onto the same team.

McGhee punted 34 times during his senior year and averaged 46.2 yards per punt and got his kicks inside the 20-yard line 16 times. He also had 32 touchbacks on kickoffs and was 7-of-8 on field goal attempts while making all 29 of his extra points.

In addition, the 2018 Pennsylvania Football Writer’s All-State Team was announced for Class 2A, 4A and 6A on Thursday.

Chestnut Ridge sophomore quarterback Logan Pfister and Everett defensive back Macen Akers both made the 2A team.

“I was surprised, it has been one of my goals since I started playing football,” Akers said. “It’s always been something I have been wanted to be a part of, and I was excited to get the news.”

Akers had eight interceptions with two returned for touchdowns while playing just eight games defensively.

“The plan to start the season was that I was just supposed to play quarterback and not play defense,” Akers said. “We ended up needing me, and I just did the best I could.”

As the Warriors’ quarterback, he guided Everett to eight wins and the District 5 Class 2A finals with his arm (77-for-203, 1,402 yards, 16 TDs) and feet, turning 210 rush attempts into 1,231 yards and 16 scores.

Pfister threw for the most passing yards in the Mirror’s core coverage area, going 131-for-201 with 1,772 yards and 16 touchdowns in his first year as a starting quarterback. The Lions won the District 5 Class 2A championship and lost to PIAA 2A runner-up Wilmington, 40-33, in the state playoffs.

“He really emerged as a true dual-threat quarterback,” Chestnut Ridge coach Max Shoemaker said. “His running ability and his ability to break away and make big plays along with throwing the ball with his accuracy is just unreal.”
