WPIAL power eliminates State College from postseason with big win

State College’s season came to an end Saturday night at Mansion Park, as the Little Lions couldn’t find an answer to Pine-Richland running back Luke Meckler.

Meckler, the 5-foot-9, 160-pound back ran for 207 yards and three touchdowns and caught another from sophomore quarterback Cole Spencer to lead the Rams to a 55-33 win over State College in the PIAA Class 6A quarterfinals.

State College was in the game, trailing only 14-7, after one quarter of play. However, Pine-Richland began to pull away in the second quarter with a 21-7 showing, good enough for a 35-14 lead at the break.

Little Lion receiver Keaton Ellis caught six passes for 199 yards, including an 81-yard catch-and-run from Tommy Friberg, who finished the day 12-of-22 passing for 301 yards. Dresyn Green also ran for two Little Lions touchdowns.

The Little Lions, who outscored Pine-Richland, 13-7, in the third quarter, finished the season at 12-3. With the victory, the Rams improved to 12-2.

Pine-Richland will take on St. Joseph’s Prep School this weekend in the state semifinals. Harrisburg and Coatesville will take on each other in the other semifinal bracket. State College lost to Harrisburg during the regular season.
