Tigers hope to keep rolling against Brashear
Since it left the WPIAL three seasons ago, Hollidaysburg has yet to play a playoff game the first week of the postseason.
That changes Friday night when the Golden Tigers take on Brashear for the District 6-8 Class 5A championship at Saint Francis University at 7 p.m.
“The past couple years, we have had two weeks off before we start the playoffs,” Hollidaysburg lineman Nathan Howells said. “With the gap between our regular season and playoffs, it was hard to keep focused, especially when you know you don’t have a game at the end of the week. It’s nice to go right into the playoffs, especially coming off a win.”
Hollidaysburg will actually enter the playoffs with four straight wins.
“In general, we’ve been playing really well, especially on defense,” Hollidaysburg coach Homer DeLattre said. “We’ve protected the ball better and moved the ball better in the running game. We’re also as healthy as we’ve been since the State College game.”
It was against the Little Lions that the Golden Tigers suffered their most lopsided loss of the year, 49-22. Three losses by a combined total of 26 points followed, but Hollidaysburg outscored its final four opponents, 176-41.
“It’s good that we can stay in our routine,” DeLattre said. “We’ve played pretty well over the last four weeks.”
Hollidaysburg’s opponent has just two wins on the field (and a forfeit victory over Vincentian) but has also suffered some close losses.
“They have good athletes, and their skill guys are very fast,” DeLattre said. “On the front line, they have some good guys that can move. They were favored to win the Pittsburgh City League coming into the season but had some close losses to some really good teams. They were within a couple plays of playing for a City League title. They are not as bad as their record makes it seem.”
The Golden Tigers have played Brashear in each of the past two regular seasons and scored 49 points, but last year’s game was much more competitive as the Bulls put up 26 points.
“They have guys back that played well against us last year,” DeLattre said. “We’ll have to play a good game and be ready.”
