Long TD runs by Harr lift C-K to victory

HOUTZDALE – Moshannon Valley bottled up Claysburg-Kimmel running back Kobe Harr in the first half, limiting him to just 13 yards on seven carries.

Harr, however, didn’t stay bottled up in the second half of Friday night’s game at CNB Bank Stadium.

On two successive running plays, he went 59 yards for a touchdown and 75 yards for a score and finished with 185 yards on 16 carries. The touchdowns broke open a close game and lifted the Bulldogs to a 26-13 win.

“I was really excited about the way we came out in the second half,” Claysburg-Kimmel coach Matt Bilchak said. “Mo Valley is enormous on their offensive line, and I was worried we weren’t able to run the ball as effectively as we like. We kind of made some adjustments at halftime, saw some things that we liked and Kobe was able to make some plays for us.”

“We keyed on our right side,” Harr said. “We knew we had some good blockers over there. We changed some things on the line, had a little big different play-calling. We figured it out in the second half, and I think it will work for the rest of the season.”

The Knights had excellent field position in the first half, starting at the 50 on their first two possession, the C-K 35 on their third and their own 33, 41 and 49 on the following series.

Mo Valley senior tailback Jon Dale churned out 195 yards rushing on 33 carries, but the Knights’ only first-half score came with 44.1 seconds left.

“It just can’t happen,” Mo Valley coach Mike Keith said. “When you’re driving the ball, you have to score touchdowns. On defense, you have to get off the field, and right now we’re not getting off the field.”

Harr was often the C-K defender tackling Dale.

“He’s a talented player,” Bilchak said. “We’re lucky to have a player like him on our team and someone we can rely on for multiple things.”

C-K sophomore quarterback Corey Chamberlain, who threw for 197 of his 240 yards in the first half, connected with Zach Claycomb for an 88-yard touchdown pass with 1:01 left.

“I’ve been really pleased with his progression this year and the way that he’s handling the big stage,” Bilchak said of Chamberlain. “He handles it like he’s a fifth-year senior.”

On Mo Valley’s next play, quarterback Ben Murawski hit Joseph Bacher for a 59-yard touchdown pass.

With the once-beaten Bulldogs holding a 14-7 lead entering the second half, Harr was stopped for a 1-yard gain on the first play, but he scooted 59 yards to the end zone 47 seconds into the half. There were three touchdowns scored in a span of 1:48.

Dale moved the Knights down the field to the C-K 11 on the ensuing series, but he was thrown for a 2-yard loss, and the ball was snapped over Murawski’s head on fourth down.

On C-K’s second play of the next series, Harr found open ground again down the Mo Valley sideline, threw a wicked stiff-arm on defender Jacob Matchock at the Knight 23 and scored easily on the 75-yard run with 6:42 remaining in the third quarter.

“I’ve been doing that since I was in fifth grade,” Harr said of the stiff-arm. “The stiff-arm has always been my big thing. I love to do it.”

“I definitely think they were keying on him,” Bilchak said, “and I think rightfully so. He’s a great running back. Mo Valley had a great game plan, and they were definitely keeping our running game in check. If it weren’t for some splash plays, the results could have been different.”

Mo Valley went on a 10-play, 63-yard drive that ended with Dale scoring from the 1 just 34 seconds into the fourth quarter. Dale carried eight times on the drive for 64 yards.

The Bulldogs, though, held the Knights scoreless the rest of the way to push their record to 3-1.

“It’s a very good feeling,” Bilchak said of his team’s record. “I’m happy for the kids, that we’re building on the success we had last year. I’m looking forward to having our homecoming game next week (against Glendale).”
