High-powered Titans score another win

SAXTON — Instead of a game that was forecasted to be a good one to watch, Tussey Mountain made sure it would be better for its fans. The Titans didn’t give visiting Everett a chance in a 32-13 win Friday.

Everett (1-1) did nothing to slow down the running game and gave up chunks of yards through the air. Cole Weist ran for 125 yards and two touchdowns for the Titans. Matthew Leonard completed 13 of 18 passes for 144 yards and a touchdown. Brady Villa had eight receptions for 90 yards and that one score.

“We’re doing pretty good. We’re playing hard and getting better each week and building depth,” Tussey Mountain coach Anthony Sottasante said.

It was a pretty dominating performance for the 2-0 Titans. Everett didn’t have a first down in the first half and accrued only 13 yards before halftime.

Everett was coming off a nice win over Juniata Valley, but looked nothing like the team that took a 32-26 decision in that meeting. Macen Akers was contained for 58 yards on the ground and he was four of 12 for 86 yards and one touchdown in the air.

“We didn’t come in mentally ready,” Everett head coach Winston Redman remarked. “They totally dominated us in every aspect of the game. It was one of those nights but we’re not done.”

Tussey Mountain went out to a 26-0 lead. The Titans opened the game with a 74-yard scoring drive.

Everett didn’t do much to slow down the running attack and Weist, Kaden Lucko, and Brendan Gorey all had good success. Leonard threw to Brady Villa for 15-yards on third and 4.

After three more running plays Villa caught another pass for 13 yards. Weist then went off right tackle for a 6-yard touchdown run.

Everett fumbled on its first play from scrimmage and Tyler Rhodes recovered for the Titans. Both teams were stopped on fourth down plays after that before Tussey carried the ball into the second quarter.

The Titans were driving again but it was their turn to lose the football and Luke Decker fell on it for the Warriors. The teams traded punts, then Weist recovered another fumble by the Warriors.

Three plays later Gorey took the pitch and ran left for a 13-yard touchdown. Colton Bishop scored the two-point conversion for a 14-0 lead.

On its next possession, Villa caught a 30-yard pass from Leonard before Lucko carried for a 4-yard touchdown and a 20-0 advantage at halftime.

Everett was stopped at the Tussey 26 in the third quarter when Weist sacked Akers on fourth and 3.

Tussey then went 70 yards for another score. Nick Brumbaugh grabbed a 17-yard pass, and later gained six more on a completion from Leonard. Gorey caught a nice little drop off from Leonard for a 21-yard gain before Leonard scored from 4 yards out.

Everett secured its initial first down of the game to begin the second half. After falling behind 26-0 the Warriors were able to score. Akers had completions of 28 and 25 yards to Cameron Mellott and Brandon Mills respectively. After scrambling for time he found Mills for a 4-yard touchdown.

Early in the fourth, Lucko ran for 19 yards and Tyler Rhodes took a sweep left for 40 yards. Weist then broke through the middle of the line for a 33-yard scoring run.

Everett scored quickly with a 54-yard touchdown pass from Quinton Spade to Hunter Browning with 7:22 to play.

“The defense did a great job and we played really well,” commented Sottasante. “We’re off to a great start here but if we want to meet our goals we have to clean some things up.”
