First win still eludes Pirates

WILLIAMSBURG — Williamsburg had its work cut out for it at home Friday and struggled to move the football. Because of that, Southern Huntingdon scored 28 points in the second quarter and improved to 3-0 with a 35-6 win.

The Blue Pirates (0-3) converted two first downs and managed just 24 yards of total offense in the first half. The Rockets gained 209 yards before the break and made sure the outcome was going to be in their favor.

“Our goal was to take care of business,” Southern Huntingdon coach Ryan Garlock said. “We wanted to get better at some things and clean up some other things, and come out of it healthy.”

Williamsburg is dealing with a very small and very young roster. And because of that, coach Bob Hearn is looking for improvement each week.

“Our kids got better tonight,” Hearn said. “There was some improvement. Southern Huntingdon is a really good football team. There’s a reason they’re 3-0.”

The Pirates got the ball to start the game, and the first play from scrimmage saw a high snap go over Wade Shultz’ head for a 15-yard loss. Williamsburg went three-and-out on that possession.

Southern Huntingdon started at the Williamsburg 34 and scored seven plays later. Scott Garlock kept the ball on an option for a 13-yard gain. Eric Patton went 3 yards for the touchdown and Kendrel Marino kicked the first of his three extra points on the night.

The Rockets weren’t giving up much on the ground and stopped the Pirates again and gaining one first down.

Patton had runs of 28 and 21 yards before play moved into the second quarter. On third and seven, Garlock tossed the ball to Jordan Bailey on a screen that was wide open and he ran 16 yards for the score. Tyler Clark blocked the point after.

Near midfield, Williamsburg faked the punt with a direct snap to Clark but he was stuffed and the Rockets took over.

Bailey caught a pass for 22 yards and then Zach Hunsinger went around the end for a 10-yard touchdown and a 20-0 lead with seven minutes to go before the break.

The Pirates punted again, and Bailey picked the ball up off the ground. He found his way to the outside and went 64 yards for a touchdown and a 27-0 advantage.

“I wasn’t so sure how special our special teams were going to be this year,” Garlock remarked. “We had all three phases of the game today.”

A dropped pass forced Williamsburg to punt again. Southern scored with 55 seconds on the clock. Garlock hit Colby Varner down the middle for a 60-yard touchdown. Patton ran for two points to set the score at 35-0.

Southern Huntingdon got the ball to begin the second half. The starters moved past midfield and then the junior varsity came on the field. Marino carried for a first down but a bad exchange turned the ball over when Shane Brantner recovered the fumble for Williamsburg.

Clark made juggling catch as he was falling down for 13 yards. The Pirates were stopped when Casey Willis intercepted Shultz.

The Blue Pirates used almost 10 minutes of the fourth quarter to move 77 yards and score their first points of the season. Dallas Price and Shultz ran hard and five first downs put the ball at the one. Clark got the call for the touchdown, but the two-point pass failed.

“Down 35-0 at halftime our kids could have gone through the motions in the second half. They came out and tried to execute. The guys are working and trying to improve,” Hearn remarked.

Garlock finished five of eight for 112 yards and two scores. Eric Patton picked up 64 yards and a touchdown rushing.

Shultz gained 55 yards on 12 carries and was four of eight for 15 yards and one pick.

Southern is home next week for Mount Union (0-3). Williamsburg hosts Juniata Valley (1-2).
