SOMERSET — With eight new starters on both sides of the football, Bishop Guilfoyle needed the entire first half of Saturday’s 17-0 victory over Somerset to get comfortable.
The Marauders had good field position much of the frame, but the Eagles were up to the challenge defensively. Somerset forced Bishop Guilfoyle to punt on all five first half possessions. Kolton McGhee flipped the field a number of times for the Marauders, helping pin the Eagles back in their zone.
The Golden Eagles had the best opportunity in the frame, but were unable to put any points on the scoreboard.
It was all Bishop Guilfoyle offensively in the second half.
The Marauders received the ball to open the second half and drove from their 22 down the field in six plays to find paydirt.
Bishop Guilfoyle quarterback Danny Carrieri ran three times for 18 yards and had two completions for a total of 63 yards, including a 15-yard touchdown pass to Ben McCloskey in the drive. McCloskey held on to a jump ball and shook off a Somerset defender in the back of the end zone. Kolton McGhee was good on the PAT and the Marauders led 7-0 with 8:52 left in the third quarter.
On the second play of the ensuing drive for Somerset, a botched toss resulted in a turnover when AJ Abraham fell on the ball for the Marauders at the Eagles 17.
Bishop Guilfoyle wasted little time adding to its lead. Four running plays, two by Caleb Crawford, one by Carrieri and one by Michael McCall, a six-yard scamper to the left pileon, were all it took to find the end zone. McGhee was again good on the PAT for a 14-0 advantage with 6:14 left in the quarter.
Both teams traded punts on their next possessions.
Somerset quarterback Spencer Yutzy was intercepted on the Marauder 35 yard line by Dominic Pulcinello a minute into the fourth quarter.
Bishop Guilfoyle put together a nine-play drive and took 6:32 off the clock to set up the final scoring play of the game. McGhee chipped in a 24-yard field goal to make it 17-0.
“A home-field, packed house behind those guys, Somerset came ready to play,” Bishop Guilfoyle head coach Justin Wheeler said. “Coach Landis had those guys ready to play. We replaced eight starters, so it took a little time for our guys to forget about the bright lights and start playing football. I was glad our guys fought well in the first half and we were tied at 0-0.
“We made the adjustments at the halftime and we saw what they were doing to us. They stopped what we do best and so we needed to make some plays. Danny Carrieri had about as good of a half as we have had.”
Carrieri finished with 44 yards rushing on 12 carries and was 6 of 10 in completions with another 72 yards. Crawford added 33 yards rushing and Luke Yanoshak had 23 yards rushing.
Yutzy led the Eagles with 48 yards rushing on 15 carries. He was 4 of 12 passing for 21 yards with three interceptions. Brody Hillegas had a solid night defensively, including a sack for a 13-yard loss.
“Our guys played for four quarter and did a nice job flying around and making plays,” Somerset head coach Bob Landis said. “That first scoring drive for them, we were there, we competed for the football. We had some missed tackles and couple of little things we need to clean up.
“Offensively we were able to move the ball at times. This was Yutzy’s first start at quarterback. We are real close. We just need to watch the film and see what we need to do better. We didn’t want to put him into the situation we did late in the game.”
Bishop Guilfoyle (1-0) hosts Westmont next Saturday. Somerset (0-1) will hit the road to face Bishop McCort.
