Akers big part of Everett win in opener

EVERETT — Trailing 6-0 after the first quarter, the Everett football team rallied to take a lead at halftime, then held on in the fourth quarter to open the season with a 32-26 victory over Juniata Valley Friday night.

Juniata Valley got on board first, thanks to a 50-yard touchdown pass from Quinn Zinobile to Cameron Collins. The two-point conversion pass failed, but Valley led, 6-0, at the 10:53 mark.

Everett went to work in the second quarter, scoring 19 points for a 19-13 halftime lead.

Brandon Mills opened the scoring by catching a 47-yard touchdown pass from Macen Akers. The two-point run failed, but the Warriors were tied at 6-6 at the 11:08 mark.

Juniata Valley went back on top at the 9:09 mark when it scored on a Gabe Brower 5-yard touchdown reception from Zinobile. Jefferson Hill added the PAT kick to make it 13-7.

Akers took over for Everett in the final five minutes of the first half for the 19-13 lead. The Warrior quarterback, who rushed for 105 yards on 13 carries, while completing four passes for 137 yards, scored on a 1-yard run at the 4:52 mark. The two-point pass failed and Everett found itself trailing, 13-12.

Akers’ next touchdown run went for 15 yards at the 2:56 mark. This time a successful PAT kick made it 19-13 Warriors.

Everett went up 26-13 at the 4:32 mark of the third quarter when Akers scored on a 49-yard run. The Warriors finished with 175 yards on the ground.

Juniata Valley refused to go away, scoring the next two touchdowns. Ryan Betres took it in from 3 yards out, which was followed by a Hill PAT which made it 26-20. Grant Musser, with just 12 seconds left in the third, caught a 4-yard touchdown pass from Collins. The kick failed but the two teams went into the fourth quarter tied at 26-all.

Akers delivered in the fourth quarter, scoring on a 3-yard run with 2:30 left in the game. The two-point pass failed, setting the final score at 32-26.

Zinobile finished with 101 yards rushing on 14 carries while teammate Jaxson Rand totaled 111 yards on 23 carries. However, the Green Hornets turned the ball over three times in the game while Everett had no turnovers.

Everett hopes to go 2-0 when it plays at Tussey Mountain next Friday night. The Titans opened with a win over Claysburg-Kimmel. Juniata Valley will host Mount Union next week. The Trojans are coming off a shutout loss at Huntingdon in their opener.
