Walters’ passing, running propel Golden Tigers

HOLLIDAYSBURG — The Hollidaysburg Golden Tigers might have taken Tyrone a little lightly, but once Brady Walters got going there was no stopping them.

Walters passed for 184 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 141 yards and two TDs as Hollidaysburg rolled over Tyrone, 38-7, Friday night at Tiger Stadium.

The homecoming crowd was a bit uneasy with a scant 14-7 halftime lead, but the Tigers outscored the Golden Eagles 24-0 in the second half to win going away.

Hollidaysburg improved to 5-3 while Tyrone fell to 2-6 and could be in danger of not making the District 6-3A playoffs.

After admonishing his team for underestimating Tyrone, Hollidaysburg coach Homer DeLattre said his Tigers were able to overcome their sluggish start and dominate most of the night.

“They’re pretty good and have played a good schedule,” DeLattre said of Tyrone. “They did some things we weren’t prepared for and kept us off balance early, but once we started, we were able to move most possessions.”

Walters, a 5-foot-11, 180-pound junior, tossed a 7-yard scoring pass to Trevor Miller early in the second quarter and, after Tyrone’s Brandon Loose tied it with a 3-yard TD run, Walters ran one in from the 2 to give the Tigers a 14-7 lead at the half.

It was all-Hollidaysburg after intermission.

Vlad Hilling’s 32-yard field goal made it 17-7 early in the third. After Walters’ 9-yard scamper made it 24-7 after three periods, Walters broke loose for a 68-yard scramble to the 9. Then the QB hit Jack Sauserman for a TD on the next play, hiking the lead to 31-7.

“(Walters) has been real good at running the offense,” DeLattre said. “He controls the tempo and finds the option. Sauserman is athletic and Patrick Young runs well.

“Once we get into rhythm, we’re pretty good.”

Walters accounted for 325 of the Tigers’ 448 yards with his passing and running, but credited teammates for his success.

“Sauserman is a playmaker,” Walters said of the senior wideout who caught seven passes for 117 yards and a TD. “He’s always open.

“Our line blocking was great and our receivers did a good job,” Walters noted. “Without the whole team, I don’t make those yards.”

Tyrone played well early, but couldn’t sustain it.

“We moved the ball but we’ve got to capitalize and put the ball in the end zone,” Tyrone coach Jason Wilson said. “They moved us inside and pushed us off the ball, particularly in the second half.

“And, their quarterback was tough,” Wilson noted. “He made us miss a lot of tackles.”

Game notes: There were 21 penalties, 12 against Tyrone and 9 against Hollidaysburg. … Tiger sophomore Trenton Paddock scored on a 30-yard run with only 19 seconds left. … Hollidaysburg hosts Central Mountain next Friday while Tyrone entertains Penns Valley. … Taylor Valente was crowned homecoming queen. Noah Frank was her escort.
