Marauders keep rolling

Mark Conrad does a little bit of everything for the Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic football team.

The senior standout scored points four different ways for the Marauders in a 58-0 mercy-rule victory over Bishop Carroll Catholic Saturday night at Mansion Park.

After opening the scoring 1:24 into the game with a 5-yard touchdown catch from Josh Yasulitis, Conrad made it a 13-0 game with a 20-yard interception return for a touchdown midway through the first quarter.

He threw a touchdown pass midway through the second quarter, a 10-yarder to Daniel Potopa, added a pair of extra points and put a kickoff in the end zone for good measure.

“He is an unbelievably great athlete. It’s fun to showcase him a couple different ways,” BG coach Justin Wheeler said. “That’s something we try to do for recruiting and other purposes. It’s nice when college coaches get to see him do so many different things.”

After completing a 10-yard pass to Mike Berish on the game’s first play from scrimmage, Conrad moved to wide receiver. Josh Yasulitis played quarterback the rest of the first quarter.

“Whatever coach Wheeler asks me to do, I try to do to the best of my ability. I just do whatever I’m asked to do. It’s fun winning,” Conrad said. “I played wide receiver all last year and played quarterback all my life so I’m pretty comfortable doing either one.”

Using both at quarterback makes the Marauders offense more dynamic, Wheeler said.

“We’re going to continue doing that. Conrad’s still going to be a quarterback. So is Yasulitis. Having that 1-2 punch will only help us down the road, especially if there’s an injury,” the coach said. “Josh is a really good quarterback. I think we’re a more dangerous team when he’s there with Mark at wide receiver. He’s one of the best wide receivers in the state.”

BG added two more touchdowns in the first quarter for a 27-0 lead. Yasulitis scored on a 21-yard run, and Max Sankey followed that up with a 14-yard scoring run.

Berish padded the lead with a 21-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter. After Conrad’s TD pass to Potopa, Tyler Berkheimer closed out the first half scoring with a 4-yard touchdown run, putting Bishop Carroll in a 48-0 hole.

Fourteen different Marauders carried the ball, racking up 270 yards, and five different players played quarterback.

The Guilfoyle defense dominated as well. Carroll not only failed to score, but it managed just one first down and negative-29 yards of total offense.

“Obviously, we have to work on some things,” BC coach Sean Billings said. “We can’t let that scoreboard dictate what their potential is because we see it every day. These boys are capable so much more. That’s the thing. We don’t want to see them take a look at the scoreboard and think we’re a 58-0 team.”

BG improves to 7-0 and extends its winning streak to 54 games with the win. Bishop Carroll falls to 1-6.

The coaches and players are all well aware of the streak, but it’s not something anybody emphasizes or talks much about for that matter, both Wheeler and Conrad said.

“It’s fun for the community to be part of and be in the national conversation, but these kids know that the goal is not to extend the streak. It’s to win the game they’re in and go on to play for a championship. We don’t really ever discuss it. We don’t even joke around about it,” Wheeler said. “We just want to play a better game than we played last week. If we can do that, we’ll be a pretty dangerous team as the season goes on.”

“We know it’s there. We just try to go week to week and make ourselves better,” Conrad added.
