Tigers pummel Brashear

HOLLIDAYSBURG — The Hollidaysburg football team used a tenacious defense in the first quarter coupled with poor special teams play by its opponent, Brashear, out of the Pittsburgh City League, en route to a 49-26 victory Friday night at Tiger Stadium.

Both teams came in at 2-2 with the Tigers riding a two-game losing skid.

“Well, it helps when you have a kicker who can kick the ball out of the end zone and make a team have to drive the entire field if it wants to score,” Hollidaysburg coach Homer DeLattre said of kicker Vlad Hilling, who buried six first-half kicks out of the end zone. “We felt we had a huge advantage in special teams and it showed.”

Hollidaysburg led 21-0 after one quarter with Patrick Young scoring on a 7-yard run and Brady Walters adding a 2-yard touchdown run. A big play came from Michael Day, who picked off a Nick Roell pass and returned it 25 yards for a touchdown.

“We played great defense early, which gave us short fields every time,” DeLattre said.

It helped Hollidaysburg that the Brashear punting game averaged 20 yards on five kicks, including the first two that went 16 and 9 yards, respectively.

“With our punting game, it’s been hit or miss,” Brashear coach Rick Murphy said. “He is not our initial punter, but he is doing it now and we have to get better at it.”

The Golden Tigers led 35-12 at halftime, thanks to another Young touchdown run (10 yards) and a 7-yard touchdown pass from Walters to Austin Weakland. Young finished with 98 yards on just 16 carries. Brashear did manage to score twice on the arm of Roell, who tossed touchdown passes of 31 and 21 yards.

“They got behind us sometimes and used their athleticism to go up and get some balls on us,” DeLattre said.

The Tigers scored on the opening drive of the second half, running the ball six straight plays, covering 54 yards, ending in a 1-yard touchdown run by Young, making it 42-12.

“We talked to our linemen and told them we were going to come out and run and they did a good job there,” DeLattre said of Josh Dunkle, Nick Yingling, Josh Howells, Ben Burk and Nathan Howells who were in on that series.

Brashear lost two quarterbacks in the game to injury, with Roell getting sacked in the third quarter, and backup Max Townsend leaving in the fourth after getting sacked. Running back Anthony Carrington ran the offense out of the wildcat to close the game.

“We did a lot of blitzing and we thought that was something they would have trouble with,” DeLattre said. “I thought we tackled better.”

Game notes: Walters added a 6-yard touchdown run near the end of the third for the team’s final score, which made it 49-20 at the time. … Before exiting, Townsend did throw a 99-yard touchdown pass to Jayon Blair when Hollidaysburg was up, 42-12, midway through the third. … Though the Tigers did give up 321 passing yards, they held the Bulls’ ground game to negative 4 yards. … Hollidaysburg goes to Erie next week to play McDowell.
