High school football scholar-athletes named
Area high school football players recently earned the 2016 Western Pennsylvania Football Conference Scholar-Athlete Awards.
The award goes to a senior football player with the highest grade-point average.
Among the winners from the area were Altoona’s Jake Lindner, Bedford’s Natanael Vargas, Bellwood-Antis’ Jarryd Kissell, Bishop Guilfoyle’s Nathan Callahan, Cambria Heights’ Jared Shank, Central Cambria’s Billy Davis, Chestnut Ridge’s Victor Faupel-Persons, Northern Cambria’s Nathan Dumm and Penn Cambria’s Bryan Long.
Team classification winners, based on regular-season only, were 1A Bishop Guilfoyle, 2A Ligonier Valley and Kane, 3A Central, 4A Clearfield and Johnstown and 5A Hollidaysburg.
Lantzy, Myers prevail
HOLLIDAYSBURG — The team of Marcus Lantzy and Tim Myers won the Scotch Valley Country Club Cross Country Scramble in November.
Justin Ohler and Jason Steinbugl were second, and Denny Doll and Dan McGrath tied with Jeff Wolfe and Rafe Hite for third.
NC’s Kirsch, Frederick honored
ARMAGH — Northern Cambria’s Nick Kirsch and Cody Frederick were named to the Heritage Conference All-Conference Football Team.
Other Northern Cambria athletes named to the all-conference fall sports teams were Caitlin Rippin in volleyball, Hunter Duriez and Emily Weaver in golf, and Kaitlynne Jones and Chris Perrone in cross country.
