Tyrone coach to be named Monday
TYRONE – The Tyrone Area School Board is set to name the district’s next football coach at its regular session next Monday.
The board met Tuesday for its work session, but a candidate could not be presented for the board’s consideration at that time, as interviews were still being conducted, said Brian Bressler, chair of the board’s student activities and services committee.
Bressler said interviews should conclude today, and that board members will be alerted to the possible candidate ahead of Monday’s meeting.
The stipend for the football coach has not been set, as it must first be determined if the candidate is a member of the district’s bargaining unit, but the coach will not receive any benefits.
District Superintendent Cathy Harlow said that the football coach will serve merely in that capacity and will not fill any other education or administrative positions.
Head coach Steve Guthoff resigned in early February after helming the Golden Eagles for two seasons.
Widespread community support was behind bringing John Franco back to the coaching position, where he previously served from 1994 to 2011. Numerous football players and team supporters filled the February board meetings to ask for the board to consider re-hiring Franco.
Franco revealed that he would not apply for the job on Feb. 19.
