Northern Cambria hires new coach

NORTHERN CAMBRIA – A former Northern Cambria High School football coach got an opportunity he didn’t think possible: the chance to coach at Northern again.

The Northern Cambria School Board voted unanimously Tuesday to reappoint Frank Paronish of Nicktown as head football coach.

Paronish is a middle school biology teacher at Northern Cambria who previously ran the Colts’ program.

“Most coaches don’t get that opportunity to come back and have another chance at coaching,” he said. “I’m very pleased. I feel extremely honored once again to lead the Colts.”

Superintendent John Jubas said the school board interviewed four candidates for the position, but felt Paronish was the best candidate to lead a winning football team and continue to bring honor to the program.

“We’re very excited and very honored that Frank will return as our head football coach,” Jubas said. “He did win for us and he’s been very successful.

Paronish said he wants to recharge Colt pride in Northern Cambria and settle what he called unfinished business from 2003, when the team missed out on the Heritage Conference title and a District 6 championship.

“I’d like to definitely make a run at that,” he said.

Paronish is replacing Paul Taranto, who coached at Northern Cambria for six years and had a 29-32 record. Last year the team went 5-5. Taranto was a 1999 Northern Cambria graduate and 2004 IUP graduate.
