Local football players to be honored

STATE COLLEGE – Forty-five high school football seniors from Central Pennsylvania will be honored for their athletics, academics and community service at the 17th annual Student-Athlete Scholarship Banquet on Sunday, March 23, at the Penn?Stater Conference Center.

The event is sponsored by the Central Pennsylvania Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame on Sunday, March 23.

Area players being honored include:

n Altoona Area High School: Colby Fink

n Bedford High School: Kody Blevins

n Bellwood-Antis High School: Casey Gray

n Bishop Guilfoyle High School: Nicolas Little

n Cambria Heights High School: Isaac Sclesky

n Central High School: Adam Frederick

n Chestnut Ridge High School: Beau Bosch

n Hollidaysburg Area High School: Erik Stern

n Huntingdon Area High School: Devon Claar

n Juniata Valley High school: Caleb Taylor

n Moshannon Valley High School: Kyle O’Donnell

n Northern Bedford High School: Blake Over

n Penn Cambria High School: Dante Delerme

n Philipsburg-Osceola High School: Nicholas Boumerhi

n Tyrone Area High School: Erik Wagner

n Williamsburg High School: Austin McMonagle.

Penn State head football coach James Franklin will be the featured speaker.

At least 33 of the student-athletes will be awarded a special $1,000 college scholarship for their outstanding achievements.

Scholarship winners will be judged on three basic criteria: academics; football ability, performance and attitude; and leadership and citizenship. The scholarship money can only be used by the student-athletes to help with their education at the college or university of their choice.

One student-athlete also will be singled out for the chapter’s annual community service award named in honor of long-time chapter board member and former Penn State assistant football coach Joe Sarra. The chapter will also present lifetime achievement awards to individuals in college coaching, officiating and the media.

Since initiating the awards banquet in 1997-98, the Central Pennsylvania chapter has awarded $175,000 in scholarship money while honoring 562 deserving student-athletes from certain high schools located in the following area counties: Bedford, Blair, Cambria, Cameron, Centre, Clarion, Clearfield, Clinton, Columbia, Elk, Huntingdon, Indiana, Jefferson, Juniata, Lycoming, Mifflin, Northumberland and Union.
