Montgomery helps Bisons win

BEDFORD – Anytime the Bedford Bisons scored Friday night, there was one name that was always involved.

Sophomore quarterback Austin Montgomery threw for and ran for a combined four touchdowns as the Bisons doubled up Central Cambria, 28-14, on homecoming at Bison Stadium.

“For a sophomore we put a lot on his shoulders, and he continues to improve and continues to work hard,” Bedford coach Kevin Steele said, “[He’s] just a very smart football player,”

It wouldn’t take long for the visitors to crack the scoreboard.

On second down and 14 yards from the Red Devils 30-yard line, Will Seymour found tight end Matt Leary for a 45-yard strike which set up Seymour for a 1-yard draw for the early 7-0 lead.

Less than two minutes later, Bedford struck back as Montgomery found Zach Shaffer on a 19-yard fade route to tie the game.

The Bisons pulled away in the second quarter on a 13-play drive, finished by a 30-yard pass to Travis Hickey from Montgomery to give the Bisons a 21-7 lead at the break.

“If we wouldn’t have gotten that third touchdown, I don’t know if we would have stopped them on defense,” Montgomery said. “The momentum switch was very important.”

Central Cambria didn’t go away quietly as Seymour capped off a 14-play, 78-yard drive with an 8-yard run to bring the Devils within seven.

“We were moving the ball a little bit, then we’d break down,” Central Cambria coach Bill Corrente said. “We just couldn’t stop them offensively. We had no answers for them defensively.”

After a fourth-down stop by the Bisons defense, Montgomery struck for the fourth time on an 8-yard run for the game’s final score.

“Central Cambria is a good football team and we knew that going into it,” said Steele, whose team is now 6-2. “We knew we were in for a battle our kids were able to preserve at the end.”

Next week Bedford will head to Bishop Carroll while Central Cambria (5-3) hosts Richland.

“It’s going to be up to the kids [how we rebound],” Corrente said. “It’s going to be a difficult road.”
