Eagles erupt with 4 TDs in 2nd quarter of romp

TYRONE – Tyrone and Penns Valley were tied going into the second quarter on a cold Friday night, but a heavy dose of James Oliver and Erik Wagner provided the Golden Eagles a lot of breathing room.

A four-touchdown second quarter will do that.

Oliver ran for two touchdowns and Wagner passed for two scores in the quarter, and the Eagle defense slowed the Rams’ potent option offense to one TD to give Tyrone a 43-21 homecoming win at Gray-Veterans Memorial Field.

“Penns Valley came out tough,” Tyrone coach Steve Guthoff said. “Last year’s game was like that too. They [PV] run a really nice offense. I like what Penns Valley does on offense. We were able to make some adjustments at halftime.”

“They’re a good ball team,” PV coach Marty Tobias said. “They can put points on the board in a lot of ways, and they showed that. They capitalized on our mistakes.”

Oliver – the area’s leading rusher – ran for 145 of his 194 yards in the first half, while Wagner threw for 135 of his 153 yards in the first two quarters.

They would have gotten many more yards had Guthoff decided to keep his foot on the gas pedal, but he went to his bench at the end of the quarter with his team holding a 43-14 lead and heading toward the District 6 playoffs.

“That’s the plan,” Guthoff said of the balanced attack. “It’s really based on what the defense gives us. I’m really comfortable with Erik making decisions, James running the ball and Nick [Getz] and Silas [Crawford] catching [passes]. That takes a lot of pressure off of our offensive line.”

PV stunned the Eagles early on with a three-play, 70-yard drive that ended with Taylor Collison taking the pitch from QB Cameron Tobias 47 yards for a touchdown. Tobias scored all three PV’s touchdowns and ran for 180 yards on 24 carries, including 121 yards on 12 attempts in the first half.

But the Eagles (7-2) responded with an 11-play, 65-yard drive that ended with Oliver scoring on a 4-yard run. Oliver had eight carries on the drive, including the first five.

On the last play of the first quarter, Wagner connected with 5-foot-6, 145-pound speedster Aleic Hunter on a little flare, and Hunter used his speed and moves to go 52 yards to the PV 10. On the first play of the second quarter, Wagner hit Nick Getz for a TD pass.

The Eagles recovered a fumble at the PV 46, and six plays later, Oliver darted into the end zone from 15 yards.

The Rams (4-5) responded with a 13-play, 70-yard drive that ended with Collison scoring on a 4-yard run with 3:13 left, making the score 21-14.

The Eagles wasted little time to extend their lead as Oliver scored on another 15-yard run with 1:20 left. They weren’t done scoring, though.

Elijah Sleeth recovered Wyatt Sharp’s fumble at the 14. A Tyrone holding call moved the ball back to the 26, but Hunter made a sterling catch of a Wagner pass among Ram defenders in the end zone with 25.9 seconds left. Seth Umholtz PAT made the score 36-14 at halftime.

“He made a great catch, and he’s shorter than me,” Guthoff said laughing. “He went up between two guys. I think we threw it a little bit late, but he came to the sideline, and he wanted that play. He’s just a competitor.”

A third turnover set up Tyrone’s final touchdown. Wagner intercepted Tobias, giving the Eagles the ball at the PV 48. Oliver bolted for 45 yards to the 7 on second down, and Sleeth scored on a 2-yard run.

“[Oliver] is a fantastic back,” Coach Tobias said. “Tyrone is a very good team. They did what they needed to do. They controlled us and took advantage of the opportunities.”

Notes: Jordyn Swogger was crowned homecoming queen. … Both teams finished with 55 total plays and combined for 799 yards. … Of Cameron Tobias’ 141 passing yards, 112 came in the second half. … Wagner had a 51-yard punt.
