Richland steamrolls Bedford

JOHNSTOWN – Richland quarterback Matt Shaffer threw for 222 yards and three touchdowns while also rushing for a game-high 127 yards as the Rams rolled up nearly 600 yards of total offense and handed Bedford its first loss of the year, 53-3.

“It was a long night,” Bisons coach Kevin Steele said. “Richland is a good team with lots of good athletes.

“We didn’t do many things well, made too many mistakes and couldn’t get anything going offensively.”

After Austin Montgomery’s 36-yard field goal put the Bisons on the board late in the first quarter and pulled Bedford within 15-3, Richland (3-0) answered with four second-quarter touchdowns to turn the contest into a rout before the break.

“We wanted to come out and play at a fast pace.” Rams coach Brandon Bailey said. “We got the ball in the hands of our playmakers, and they had success.”

Richland’s defense also limited Bedford to only 123 yards of total offense.

Shaffer’s 14-yard touchdown pass to Mario Rizzo opened the night’s scoring, and Nick Naglic followed that up with a 14-yard touchdown run on the Rams’ next possession.

Richland answered Montgomery’s field goal with a 95-yard scoring drive keyed by a Shaffer 70-yard run that set up his 10-yard touchdown strike to Linnie Joy that made it 23-3 early in the second.

An errant punt snap by the Bisons subsequently produced a Richland safety, and on the ensuing Rams possession, Tanner Solarczyk capped off a 64-yard drive with an 8-yard touchdown.

Killian Snopko bulled in from a yard out to put Richland up 39-3 at the 2:49 mark, and the Rams tallied one more score before the break. Shaffer completed 6-of-8 passes for 68 yards in the final 1:03, including an 8-yard touchdown to Kyle Flick as time expired in the half to produce a 43-point advantage.

Richland moved 96 yards in just five plays to open the third quarter and produce the final points of the contest. Dominic Farina’s 59-yard run was followed by a 19-yard Shaffer-to-Flick connection and Solarczyk’s second touchdown of the game, a 9-yard run.

Bedford will attempt to get back on the winning track next week when it hosts Bishop McCort.
