Red Devils rebound for win
EBENSBURG – Central Cambria rebounded nicely from last week’s season-opening loss by delivering an early knockout punch to visiting Greater Johnstown in a 35-14 victory over the Trojans.
Red Devil senior running back Scott Bauer, who finished with a game-high 111 yards, raced 60 yards to paydirt on just the second play of the game. That helped the Devils build an eventual 21-0 lead by the end of the first quarter and gave first-year Central Cambria coach Bill Corrente his first win at the Devils’ helm.
“We’ve been talking about finishing since [the] summer,” Corrente said. “Tonight we finished runs, finished blocks and finished tackles. We still have a lot to work on but we took a big step forward.”
Central Cambria quarterback Will Seymour rushed for 77 yards and two touchdowns while completing 3 of 5 passes for 39 yards and another score.
“Will is a student of the game and is capable of making explosive plays both running and throwing,” Corrente said.
Central Cambria outgained Johnstown by a 304-73 margin on the ground, and the Devils forced five Trojan turnovers.
“I obviously didn’t have us ready to play tonight, and Central Cambria was ready,” Johnstown coach Tony Penna Jr. said. “Tonight wasn’t our night. They controlled the ball, and put us in a hole that we couldn’t pull out of.”
Seymour’s 5-yard keeper put the Devils up 14-0 at the 2:32 mark of the first quarter, and after a Trojan fumble on the ensuing series, Seymour then hit Matthew Leary for a 21-yard strike that made it 21-0 heading into the second.
Bauer’s second touchdown, a 23-yard run, capped off a seven-play, 95-yard drive that put the Devils up by 28 at the half.
The Trojans (1-1) battled back in the third with a pair of scoring drives. Terrell Jones finished a 10-play drive to open the third quarter with a 1-yard touchdown, and Johnstown eventually pulled within 28-14 on Devin Miller’s 14-yard score with 2:23 left in the third.
Johnstown then recovered a Seymour fumble at the Devils 12 on the ensuing series, but Central Cambria slammed the door on the Trojan comeback when Micah Magley picked off Jeremy Updyke’s pass and returned it to the Red Devil 28.
From there, Seymour helped Central Cambria put the game away as he carried four times for 58 yards and finished the drive with a 14-yard touchdown run with 8:19 left that set the final.
