AASD picks head coaching candidates

Board expected to vote on Klausman, Fleegle

The Altoona Area School District could have its new head boys and girls basketball coaches in place by Thursday night.

The Mirror has learned from multiple sources that Jarrod Klausman will be the athletic council’s recommended choice to be the next Altoona boys coach and Chris Fleegle will be the recommended girls coach selection when the AASD School Board meets Thursday.

Nothing is official until the board votes to approve the candidates.

Klausman and Fleegle are both in their mid-to-late 30s, neither has head coaching experience at the scholastic varsity level, and both played high school basketball under Kraig Hetz.

Klausman would replace Doug West, who resigned his position recently after going 26-41 in three seasons, and Fleegle would take over for Miriam Colledge, who also recently resigned after going 79-42 and winning three District 6 championships in five seasons.

Fleegle, during his playing days, helped Hollidaysburg win two District 6 Class 4A championships under Hetz in 1999 and 2000 and was a Mirror first-team all-star his senior year of 1999-2000.

Hetz then left Hollidaysburg for Altoona to replace Art Taneyhill and won another District 6 4A title in 2001 with Klausman being a key senior starter for the Mountain Lions.

Klausman played baseball at the University of Richmond and Marietta College, and he also played a season of professional baseball in the Frontier League.

He has bided his time as an assistant coach in the Hollidaysburg boys basketball program the last several years under Mick Pentoney and Brad Lear. He has been a finalist for several head boys basketball coaching jobs in recent years, including State College and Altoona, when West was hired.

Fleegle has been an assistant for Deanna Jubeck with the Hollidaysburg girls team and also was on West’s staff at Altoona the last three seasons.
