Smith will play D-I for school in the MAAC

Juniata Valley junior Halee Smith announced her commitment to Division I Quinnipiac to play women’s basketball Wednesday evening.

Smith helped the Lady Hornets make the PIAA Class 1A title game in back-to-back seasons as a freshman and sophomore before Juniata Valley finished as the District 6 Class 2A runner-up this season.

“First, thank you God. Without Him, I wouldn’t be where I am today and I am grateful for the talent and life He has given me. Next I would like to thank all of the coaches who put time and effort into recruiting me,” Smith wrote on Twitter. “The realtionships I have built have been special and meaningful. A huge thank you to my family! Without them I wouldn’t have been able to get through this process.

“Thank you to all my trainers high school and AAU coaches! You have shaped me into the person and player I am today and I will forever treasure all of you. Thank you to my teammates for pushing me at practice and making me a tougher and smarter player! The memories I have made with all of you will never go away. With that being said, I am so excited to announce my commitment to Quinnipiac University.”

Smith, who made the announcement on her 18th birthday, averaged 22.1 points per game for Juniata Valley this year.

Quinnipiac went 26-7 and made the NCAA Tournament after winning the MAAC under coach Tricia Fabbri this past season.
